United States Army National Guard, Manassas, Virginia (October 2006-October 2014)

Military Police Officer: Perform as a soldier one weekend a month, two weeks in the summer, and as needed for local support. Conduct law and order operations, area security, and traffic control. Instruct classes for soldiers on military police functions and transportation. Qualify with assigned individual weapons. Score soldiers for physical fitness tests and when firing at ranges for the company. Responsible for the accountability of a team of soldiers and ensure they are well informed of upcoming missions and training. PATIENT CARE

Primary care nurse for a team of 4-6 patients. Performs a wide variety of patient teaching and education, changes and care of many types of complex dressings, drains, and wound vacuums, as well as tracheal care and suctioning.

Performs venipuncture to collect lab specimens, blood and IV starts as well as IV therapy, including site care and dressing changes for peripheral and central lines, administering all IV fluids and solutions, hanging IV piggybacks, hanging and monitoring TPN, PPN, and lipids as well as hanging blood and blood products. All of the above using IV pumps, tubing, flushes and correct labeling and documenting.

Performs tube feeding, and N/G tube insertion and irrigation.

Able to set up and use auxiliary equipment such as SPO2, O2, and nebulizers. Performs blood glucose checks, monitors and administers insulin, D50, and documenting these actions.

Performs EKGs, assesses telemetry strips observing for major dysrhythmias and reacts accordingly.

Measures and documents vital signs, weights, and I&Os.

Inserts and cares for indwelling catheters.

Completes pre and post op procedures, as well as proficient in observing, responding to, and documenting emergent care in patients such as bleeding, shock, respiratory distress, signs and symptoms of infection, circulatory changes, and changes in vital signs.

Takes a special interest in psych patients and uses knowledge of these patients as well as skills learned from being an MP to respond to Dt. Atlases.

Also takes a special interest in the care of LVADs and heart transplant patients.

Works vey well and remains calm in emergency situations, assisting in rapid responses and responding to codes called throughout the hospital. Able to use ACLS and BLS to assist in the resuscitation efforts of a patient.

MEDICATION MANAGEMENT

Administers and administers all prescribed medications (oral, topical, subcutaneous, nebulizer, intramuscular, and/or intravenous,) observing for any physical or emotional change in the patients’ condition.

Properly documents all medications given and any noted change.

Able to identify certain medications a patient may need but have not been ordered and contacts the MD to have the medication order written.

Responds appropriately to a patient’s changing condition, including physical, emotional, and social factors, and updates the care plan accordingly.

If necessary, able to report and document observations to MD.

PATIENT SAFETY

Always provides a safe environment for patients as well as staff members.

Fixes or reports any potential hazards.

Adheres to safety measures and correctly uses and educates patients on equipment such as wheelchairs, stretchers, and walkers.
