● Works across the organization to optimize organizational culture, align the organization’s strategic plan and workforce diversity goals and be able to respond to changes or policies that occur outside of the organization that affects organizational culture, staff or students, and families.

● Provides strategic leadership of the review of all district policies to ensure the highest standards of equity, diversity, and inclusion in order to actualize the Superintendent's commitment to making BPS an Anti-Racist organization.

● Partners with the Office of Human Capital to administer and evaluate the results of staff engagement and climate surveys to achieve a more inclusive and diverse staff environment and to ensure that employees have a comfortable place to work and learn, regardless of their race, gender, age, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, or disability.

● The position directly oversees a team of 11 FTEs +75 per diem and contract staff and an office budget of $2M in operating and personnel funds including state and foundation grants. In July 2022, I secured funding to double the size of the team to 22 FTEs.

● In September 2021, over 48% of external hires were educators of Color. External Black hires were 23.95% of the total, a nearly 6% increase over last year, and by far the highest percentage in 7 years. Boston Public Schools, Boston, MA August 2012 to June 2017 Director of Diversity Programs

● Designed and launched a portfolio of pipeline development programs intended to cultivate the City of Boston’s racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse community in order to “grow our own” highly qualified educators and leaders:

o The BPS High School to Teacher Program is a 7-year initiative that recruits and supports the development of 50/75 BPS high school students from high school graduation, through college, ready to return to BPS as highly qualified teachers. o The BPS Community to Paraprofessional Development Program is a comprehensive 9-month training program that recruits a cohort of racially culturally and linguistically diverse Boston community members to prepare them to become highly productive paraprofessionals - 2nd cohort launched in March 2015

o The BPS Accelerated Community to Teacher Program is an intensive 9-month program designed to prepare racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse Boston residents OR BPS paraprofessionals, and substitutes who hold a Bachelor’s degree and experience working with children in a classroom setting to become novice BPS teachers with a preliminary license. 9th cohort launched in July 2022

o The BPS /UMASS Boston Education Administration Graduate Degree and Principal Certification Program is a two-year Education Administration Master’s Degree and Principal Certification Program for BPS educators. - 1st cohort launched in September 2015

● Secured funding, designed and launched new BPS retention programs: o BPS ALANA (African, Latino, Asian, and Native American) Educators Networking and Support Program - A forum for intellectual discourse that provides ALANA educators with a safe place to learn from one another, and share expertise, experiences, and practice o The BPS Male Educators of Color Executive Coaching Leadership Development Program

(MEOC) is a two-year leadership development program designed to increase engagement, retention, and leadership rates of male educators of color - 5th cohort to launch in October 2022 o The BPS Women Educators of Color Executive Coaching Leadership Development Program

(WEOC) is a two-year leadership development program designed to increase engagement, retention, and leadership rates of male educators of color - 6th cohort to launch in October 2022 o BPS School Leaders of Color Think Tank - Professional Learning Network that uses interactive problems of practice in order to identify solutions that directly build and sustain a strong school culture and student academic growth.

Wheelock College, Boston, MA August 2009 to July 2012 Director of the Office of Pre-Collegiate and College Access Programs

● Established a new institutional office; designed vision, mission, and strategic priorities that enabled Wheelock to make a significant contribution to transforming the education pipeline for public school students by preparing students with the academic skills and knowledge necessary for college access, success, and ultimately, civic engagement in the 21st century.

● Lead the Wheelock College Community Service Assessment and Development Project that resulted in a June 2012 report that outlines a strategy to better position Wheelock to organize, strategize, deliver, document, and report current and envisioned service and civic engagement efforts.

● Lead the institution’s Success Boston Initiative Team which resulted in an institutional plan committed to supporting Boston Public School alumni to both matriculate and graduate from Wheelock College

● Appointed by the college president to be the founding director and to design the Passion for Action Scholarship Program - a new global leadership and service scholarship program. The program accepted its fifth cohort of scholars in May 2012 and awarded 2 million dollars in scholarships. 100% of the first graduating class of scholars graduated in four years in May 2012 -60% of these scholars were Boston Public School graduates.

● Designed program model; wrote and received a four-year 1 million dollar federally funded TRIO grant for Teacher Bound Upward Bound. Teacher Bound at Wheelock College was the only Upward Bound program in the country that was funded to be an urban teacher development program.

● 100% of the 50 scholars graduated from high school, enrolled in college, and completed their first year of college. The 50 scholars yielded eight Posse Scholarship finalists and one Posse Scholar attending Bryn Mawr and one Gates Millennium Scholar attending Syracuse University. As of SY 19-20, four of these graduates are tenured BPS teachers.

Wheelock College, Boston, MA November 2005 to July 2009 Director of Community Engagement Initiatives

● Newly created position reporting to the college president and Vice President of Academic Affairs focused on advancing Wheelock’s mission by developing collaborative community partnerships, strategies, and initiatives engaging the Boston, Brookline, and Cambridge communities.

● Appointed by the college president to design and manage the Bridges to Hope and Understanding: Exploring Truth and Reconciliation Youth Symposium with Nobel Peace Prize recipient Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu. Chaired a multi-departmental/multi-institutional planning committee that successfully delivered the program model. Convened over 450 middle and high school students from 27 Boston public, private, and charter schools and all three past and present Boston Public School superintendents: Dr. Carol Johnson, Dr. Michael Contompasis, and Dr. Thomas Payzant.

● Designed and launched the first three Winter Policy Talks, an annual three-part series that convened over 1500 students, faculty, practitioners, school administrators, school leaders, district-level administrators, and members of the Boston community in a facilitated dialogue and learning opportunity about critical policy issues affecting children and families.

● Appointed by the college president to chair the Wheelock College Community Diversity Initiative - a cross-institutional effort intended to strengthen the Wheelock faculty, staff, and student community by addressing issues of diversity, multiculturalism, collaboration, and respect. The initiative concluded in June 2009 and resulted in the hiring of the institution’s first senior-level Chief Diversity Officer in July 2009.

● Appointed by the college president to design and lead a three-year community forum on The Education of Black Male Youth that brought 23 nationally recognized experts to Wheelock’s campus to discuss and explore resolutions connected to the education of black boys. The seminar series convened over 3,000 Boston area parents, community members, youth, school leaders, district leaders, educators, researchers, funders, and METCO directors.

● Developed curriculum and practicum seminar for undergraduate and graduate education majors pursuing licensure in Secondary Education. Outcome: Successfully mentored and instructed 100% of assigned students to complete the state requirements for licensure including their University-approved Capstone Teaching Portfolio.

Boston Public Schools, Boston, MA August 2001 to November 2005 Director of the TEACHBoston Program

● Designed and led TEACHBoston, a district-wide pre-collegiate teacher education awareness program; partnered with Wheelock College to offer 6-week summer teaching academies and with Boston High Schools to provide year-long academic courses.

● Program outcome: 93% of the students who attended the four summer teaching academies graduated from high school and enrolled in college/university.

Boston Public Schools, Boston, MA November 1999 to July 2001 High School Restructuring Coordinator

● Designed and supported school leaders in implementing a district-wide high school restructuring initiative.

● Developed innovative professional development programming for Boston school leaders and administrators to support whole-school reform.

● Chaired a citywide high school support team (a cross-functional group with representatives from the community, school district, and other local education agencies) that served to inform the superintendent’s high school reform agenda leading to a Gates Foundation grant that fully funded high school restructuring.

● Co-facilitated a yearlong high school teacher inquiry/research group with Sonia Nieto Ed.D. The research was a qualitative analysis of resiliency factors for urban educators. It resulted in the publication of a book entitled - What Keeps Teachers Going published in February 2003.

● Initiative Outcome: The initiative served to inform the superintendent’s high school reform agenda leading to a Gates Foundation grant that fully funded high school restructuring.
