Duties Summary: I was the road maintenance guy for the N. Rim. I utilized numerous types of heavy equipment to accomplish maintenance work from ditching and pot-hole repair to snow removal, street sweeping and grading the gravel roads. I had the help of 1 laborer during the summers. I also helped with many other sorts of work with other departments, such as building or resurfacing trails --notably the AZ trail through the North Rim and the Bright Angel Overlook trail, (a high use trail from the N. Rim visitor's center), building parking areas, camping area maintenance, re-habing historic structures and in 2001 I was detailed to over-see the contracted dozer operations on a major forest fire (Overlook Fire) in the Park. This was a full-time furloughed position which gave me a few months away in the winters when the N. Rim was closed due to high snows, normally December through April. This allowed me to take other work for that period of time and in 2000 I went and operated a snow-cat/groomer for Crested Butte Mountain Resort in Crested Butte, CO and in 2001 I did the same at the Jackson Hole Ski Resort in Teton Village, WY. In the Spring I used a road snowblower to open the N. Rim highway up, back at the Canyon.

Duties Summary: I was in charge of all resort parking areas as well as all area grounds, which entailed snow removal and ice mitigation, orderly parking of skiers and hotel guests, area closures, drainage and abandoned vehicle removal. I also patrolled parking areas for suspect activity and maintained the peace when patrons became disorderly. I devised and built barrier devises to provide for orderly vehicle alignment (some of which are still in use today, though much in need of maintenance!), and kept a daily log of all maintenance activities for liability protection. I supervised up to ten parking lot attendants and three to four equipment (loader/grader/truck plow & sander/Holder utility 'tractor' and Honda snowblowers) operators and acted as a supplemental operator during heavy storm cycles. In the spring/summer/fall months I took care of the Hotel and Resort landscaping and grounds adding several perennial flower beds, shrubs and many annual baskets and beds, supervising up to seven groundskeepers. We upgraded the original Hotel landscaping and added several natural rock structures/gardens and I planned and supervised the construction of the large rustic resort welcome sign still at the entrance area today. I planned and managed an annual budget of over $125,000 and provided assistance to the vehicle maintenance staff as regards my department's equipment and vehicles. We developed and managed a skating pond at the hotel in the winter and provided/installed all holiday decorations. Prior to my departure I designed and started construction of a new grounds maintenance facility which is in use today.

Duties Summary: This was summer employment, usually running from April or May to the end of October. My primary duties were to provide drainage and erosion control on back woods 4X4 roads and closed logging trails with a small dozer, forest-wide. I supervised one laborer who would locate the roads needing work on the ground, usually overgrown and remote, and help with maintenance on the equipment as well as making errand runs into town for parts/supplies/fuel. I camped out on the usually remote work locations and hauled my own equipment from job to job via end-dump and heavy trailer. I also assisted occasionally with other upper-level road maintenance or reconstruction projects if there were emergency needs (landslides/washouts, etc). I was in charge of my own project planning, logistics and record keeping. I used an ATV as mobile transport on-sites, and was an ATV training instructor for the Forest. I also helped on forest fire projects with equipment needs and in '87 was detailed to CA, Stanislaus N.F., to assist with forest and roads re-hab from the devastating fires that season using dozers, graders and misc dirt working equipment. During this time frame I worked the off-seasons (usually November to April) at the Breckenridge Ski Resort, Breckenridge, Colorado, as a grooming machine operator and for the last two seasons became the assistant crew chief. We built the competition venues for freestyle events, race courses, starting ramps and lift areas as well as grooming the ski runs to perfection. My last season there, I was chosen to go to their 'sister resort', Mount Hutt, in Methven, New Zealand as an assistant crew chief of the grooming team preparing race courses for the upcoming World Cup events to be held there in that 1990 season.

Supervisor: Charles Martin, Forestry Technician

May we contact this employer? Yes

Duties Summary: During these two summer seasons, my primary duty was as a fire prevention specialist, working with the public to provide education about forest fire awareness. I also assisted with numerous other duties to include district law enforcement needs, setting up and administering wood cutting permit areas and monitoring them for compliance and safety as well as issuing permits. I also patrolled forest roads for random firewood cutting regulations enforcement and safety checks. My previous experience at the Missoula District in Missoula, MT, threw me the additional jobs of facilities maintenance person and I became "Mr. Fix-it". I acted as a fire crew boss on smaller local fires and maintained the fire caches and fire equipment.

During the off-season, usually November to May, I worked as a ”jack-of-all-trades” at the Red Lodge Mountain Ski Area helping with snow making, grooming, road clearing, parking, facilities maintenance, rental shop tech, cafeteria operations, ticket sales and ticket checking. I also (occasionally) got to ski - for free!

Prior to this time I was in college at the University of Montana, receiving a B.A. in Recreation Resource Management, working P/T for the Forest Service at the Missoula Ranger District; at Marshall Mountain Ski Area (assistant to the Mountain Manager), and house painting. Before that I was a bellman at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, CO, and prior to that a SP/4 in the Army at Ft. Carson, CO. working in a down-range rock crushing facility operating dozers, loaders, graders, water trucks and an occasional 5T tractor trailer combo. This after having received an Honor graduate cert from the Engineering Equipment Training facility at Ft Leonard-Wood, MO. I had been drafted after leaving college at Paul Smith’s College in the Adirondacks of New York, in June 1972 after earning an A.A.S. degree in Forest Recreation. I grew up on a rural farm in Vermont using tractors and all types of farm equipment and graduated from Rochester High School in June, 1970.
