Staff Nurse, Alexander Correctional Institution

08/2010 – 02/2013

Daily I address health care needs of inmates with a variety of physical and mental complaints. Each complaint was assessed, and proper action was taken. Medication administration was a high priority for this position. Emergency situations occurred frequently, and this required close attention to detail and knowledge of emergency protocols. Equipment was checked daily to maintain the safety and security of the environment. Periodically, this role included being the charge nurse which was having responsibility for all staff working that day. In addition to working with regular population inmates I also worked with infirmary patients/inmates. Our facility had a multi-bed infirmary which provided care for a variety of diagnosis. The diagnosis ranged from fresh post-operative patients to acutely ill patients who needed a twenty-four (24) hour observation bed. These patients were seen by health care providers frequently.

Mental Health Nurse, Central Regional Hospital

01/2010 - 05/2010

The role of the mental health nurse included scheduling and managing assistive personnel daily. My unit housed twenty (20) acutely mentally ill female patients. Staff and patient safety were under constant management. Medication administration and ensuring that patients received these medications was vital. Patients who were suicidal or wanted to cause self-harm were monitored on a one-to-one basis. If the need was presented nurses managed therapeutic seclusion and therapeutic restraints for those patients.

Nurse Advisor, Carolina Oaks

05/2009 – 12/2009

During my role in this position, I assessed patients for an Enhanced Care Center, patients lived in this center due to declining health, substance abuse or mental health issues. The previous health issues mentioned prevented these patients from living on their own. I also trained staff on medication administration, blood borne pathogens, use of proper hand washing and the use of personal protective equipment.

Staff Nurse, Blue Ridge Health Care

06/2008 – 12/2009

In this experience I managed medical/surgical patients by utilizing my assessment skills to conduct a head-to-toe assessment. I used my knowledge to separate normal verses abnormal findings and report those to the charge nurse or patient’s provider. Assessment was an on-going process throughout the day to ensure no status changes had occurred. A plan of care was developed for each patient which included nursing diagnosis and educational needs of the patient and family. Collaboration with each of the multi-disciplinary team member was included. Patient care was administered carefully to ensure hospital, OSHA, and Joint Commission standards were observed. Appropriate delegations were made to assistive personnel while the nurse attended to medication administration, intravenous therapy, central line maintenance and cardiac monitoring. It is very important to always provide a safe environment for the patient and their sensitive information. HIPPA regulations always remained a high priority. Proper documentation played a key role in providing excellent care to patients. Critical thinking tied all these responsibilities together to ensure safe and competent care.

Staff Nurse, Foothills Correctional Institution

01/2006 – 03/2008

During my time in this role, I assessed and treated inmates thoroughly using protocols set forth by the medical director for the NCDOC. Reporting information to the lead nurse and nurse supervisor in a timely manner was very important. Continually checking equipment and surroundings to ensure a safe work environment for staff and inmates was a high priority.

Staff Nurse, Veterans Health Administration

06/2005 – 12/2005

As a staff nurse on a medical/surgical unit I worked with a team of other health care professionals. There were two basic teams. One team focused on patient care while the other team worked with medical needs of the patients. The patient care team assisted patients with Activities of Daily Living such as eating, bathing, and dressing. The other team administered medications, monitored vital signs, and assessed patients from head-to-toe to ensure no acute health changes had surfaced. If status changes occurred, they were reported promptly to the patient’s provider. Both teams worked together to provide excellent care to the veteran. Documentation was a key role for each team member to ensure all care was documented properly. All policies and procedures set forth by the Veterans Health Administration were followed carefully each day.
