L&R Distributors, Deer Park, NY 2001 – 2008

Director of Operations

L&R Distributors a privately owned 140MM distributor and merchandiser of cosmetics, stationary, sundries, toys, and seasonal products. L&R supplies and merchandises more than 20,000 products to chain stores and independent retailers from Distribution centers in Deer Park, Brentwood and Brooklyn New York, Rancho Cucamonga California, and through various 3PL’s. Deliveries are made using small parcel services, house contracted delivery vehicles, and common carriers. Orders are processed for overnight second and third day service to locations in the continental United States. Hired to review and update all operational systems and procedures and to implement the necessary changes to satisfy the increasing business volume and customer requirements.

Incorporated three acquisitions into the existing operation in a six month period, increasing business volume by 70% without impacting the existing customers and business.

Co-designed and implemented a zone picking and packing program that allowed orders to be sent from multiple locations while still arriving at the customer the same day. Standards were calculated and set for each zone and process as the groundwork for an incentive based pay program.

Co-designed and implemented an incentive based piece work pay system for the Deer Park and Brentwood New York facilities.

Replaced the unreliable Pitney Bowes Ascent Manifest system with PSS (Parcel Shipping System), seamlessly integrating it into the Prelude WMS system. This system provides enterprise wide up to the minute end to end order status including faxed delivery PODs with signatures while on the phone with the customer.

Reviewed inbound and outbound transportation requirements. Reduced the number of LTL carriers from more than twenty to three (2 national and 1 regional). Negotiated new discounts and FAK’s which reduced shipping costs by 38% while reducing and guaranteeing transit times.

Bid the business to the big three small parcel carriers. Consolidated the volume to two 95/5 increasing the corporate discount from 18.5 to over 40%.

Sourced, and partnered with a freight auditing service designing a system which generates an additional ongoing monthly freight savings of from 2 – 4%.

Reengineered the existing warehouses. Sourced materials, contracted and managed installation. New mezzanine, racking, and shelving layouts provided an 80% increase in pick faces and accommodated a 50% increase in transaction volume.

Engineered and installed a Panasonic IP telephone system which provided integrated voice and data services for all of the company offices, warehouses, employee offices, etc as extensions through one centrally managed switch.

Replaced an outdated Telxon RF system with a new Symbol system. Tripled the number of users, improved response time, and eliminated dropped sessions.

Productivity improvements

Central Pet/Kenlin Pet Supply, Mahwah, NJ 10/95 to 12/00

Vice President of Operations

Kenlin Pet is a $100MM division of Central Garden & Pet and the nation’s largest pet supply distributor. Kenlin Pet supplies 26,000 products to 5,000 retailers from Maine to Florida. Deliveries are made via company vehicles and contract carriers from facilities located in Mahwah NJ, China Grove NC, Atlanta GA, Tampa and Miami FL. Managed 10 direct reports, and 300 employees on three shifts.

Designed systems to service more than 100 Pet Smart retail stores with Pedigree and other M&M Mars related pet foods. Servicing this $20MM customer required EDI interfacing, a facility retrofit, and custom transportation accommodations utilizing our in house fleet and a network of common carriers. The project was taken from concept to on line in just 60 days.

Managed the installation and implementation of PSI (Prelude Systems), a WMS (warehouse management system) including RF scanning and Microsoft NT Networks.

Designed and implemented a PC/Scanner sales force order system for the remote entry of customer orders.

Designed and managed the company WEB site (www.kenpet.com)

Designed and built 18,400 square feet of new offices. Relocated the company over a weekend with no interruption of business.

Reorganized, retrofitted, and increased the capacity of the 210,000 square foot Island Road facility in Mahwah NJ by 34%.

Consolidated and dismantled Rumford Aquarium (East Providence, RI) and Garden State Pet Supplies acquisitions, and the Kenlin Spring Street (Ramsey NJ) operation into the Island Road (Mahwah, NJ) facility.

Negotiated a 51% reduction in telephone costs. Installed T1 and switched services. Selected and installed a Telrad Switch, ACD, and voice mail system.

Negotiated the direct purchase of natural gas reducing heating costs by 23 percent.

Reduced the distribution center headcount by 26 percent while increasing productivity by 17 percent.

Addison-Wesley Publishing Co (Supplemental Division) White Plains, NY

Vice President Director of Operations 11/88 to 10/95

The Supplemental Division ($50MM) consisted of three mail order divisions of the Addison-Wesley Publishing Company Cuisenaire Company of America, Inc., Dale Seymour Publishing Company, and Innovative Learning. The position was responsible for complete operations (including MIS) and reported directly to the President.

Designed and maintained an economical, dependable, state of the art "RIGHT SIZED" LAN based computer system utilizing MACOLA and Novell. (Nominated for the 1993 Computer World Smithsonian Award)

Reduced order turnaround time from eight weeks to less than 24 hours.

Reduced employee turnover from 110% to less than 2%.

Managed the growth from $8MM to $30MM in less than 5 years, which included an 80% increase in business in 1991.

Negotiated a 70% saving in freight and handling costs for inbound and outbound shipments.

Reduced the physical inventory discrepancy level from 8% to .02%.

Selected the site, negotiated the lease, and relocated the distribution center to Orangeburg, NY from New Rochelle, NY. Reorganized and relocated the distribution center each year to accommodate the unforcasted growth without missing one day of shipping.

Designed an automated packing line that reduced the number of packers by 50%.

Selected and installed a Northern Telecom Meridian 1 telephone system and MAX ACD

Created a 24/7 call center, which included the outsourcing of the after regular business hours call coverage.

Laura Ashley Inc. (North American Division) Mahwah, NJ 1981-1988

Director of Distribution and Materials Handling

$140 MM manufacturer, wholesaler, and 140 store retailer of fine garments and home furnishings. Responsible for the movement and control of all materials to the retail stores, mail order customers, decorator services, and production facilities in the US and Canada from around the world. These areas were serviced from the corporate headquarters and distribution center, public warehouses, and by factory direct shipments.

Established manual and computerized systems for controlling and monitoring the performance of the staff, vendors, and facilities.

Participated in the selection and implementation of :

oIPMS (Island Pacific Merchandising Systems) for retail POS (point of sale) inventory control, sales analysis, stock replenishment, and MRP/DRP

Set up an on line system for stock replenishment from the distribution centers through orders that were placed electronically (EDI) and delivered within three business days from anywhere in the world.

Assistant to the Director of Warehouse Management and Services

Manufacturer, wholesaler, and retailer of garments.

Responsible for the planning and allocation of stocking space and order selection for the divisions located at the Glen Rock facility. Worked directly with the production and merchandising departments to insure optimum productivity through the proper scheduling of deliveries.

Coordinated the physical move of the Vera and Vera Sport divisions from Secaucus, NJ to Wilkes Barre, PA. This entailed the dismantling of the facility, the physical move of all merchandise and the installation and instruction of the systems with the new staff.
