Work Experience
Owner/Operator, 2019 - present
Heaven Quest Express, Citrus Heights, CA
Owner/Operator of my own trucking company: Hauling general freight coast to coast.
Owner/Operator, 2013 - 2019
Gary Britt Repairs, French Gulch, Manton, Citrus Heights, CA
As a handyman, I performed many kinds of contract work: Floor covering, painting, welding, cinder block wall repairs, electrical troubleshooting and repairs, new building construction, screen door repairs, appliance repairs, plumbing repairs, new plumbing installations, cable installations and repairs, grounds keeping and irrigation installation and repairs, cutting down trees for firewood, installing insulation, installing whet plaster, decks and railings construction, roofing--new and repairs, house foundation repairs, and lock smithing, and auto repairs, as a few examples of my handyman experiences. Bee keeping was one of my favorite things to do, as well. I figured out how to extract bee hives and bee swarms from buildings, trees and once from a telephone pole, while at the same time adding these hives and swarms to my home collection. This is when I learned and developed little known techniques of combining foreign bees to existing hives, resulting in stronger colonies.
Truck Driver, 2012 - 2013
C.R. England, Salt Lake City, UT
I trained under several drivers over the road for about three months, then took a position as lease operator from coast to coast, hauling mostly refrigerated goods as a solo driver. After a few months of driving, the company added the responsibilities of training new drivers. Overall, I drove for about ten months, when I discovered that all the time I was spending on the job away from home was destroying my marriage, and so I gave up the truck and went into the handyman business, working from home.
Cable Communications Installer, 2008 - 2011
Sunshine Communications: we contracted work from Cox Communications & Time Warner, Oceanside, CA
Installations of cable and equipment for telephonic communications, television, and internet, troubleshooting all the above. When the company decided to change the overall direction of their business, installer positions were phased out. At about this time I retired in order to build a house on property my family now owned in French Gulch.
Salesman, 2004 - 2008
Flooring America, Temecula, CA
Residential Salesman: contract sales and installation of carpet, vinyl, vct, laminates, prefinished hardwood, and tile. When store traffic diminished, I convinced the boss to let me open a Commercial Division, because I was raised in and understood the way commercial business people think and work; and then the business began to flourish immediately in the commercial side. I was given full rein in the bidding process, jobsite management, through to completion. I stayed in constant communication with the boss to make sure that the size of the projects I was bidding on were within his financial comfort level, and had success for over a year. We were doing quite well, until the boss got nervous about the size of my latest approved project, and decided to step in and began to take a hands-on approach to things without communicating to me about decisions he was making with jobsite superintendents--"Just give them what they want, we'll take care of the paperwork later!", he would tell me. This was the beginning of the end for Flooring America in Temecula, because he did not understand the basic principles of sound commercial business. And would argue with me about how I was handling things, and refused all my advice. When I realized he was going to destroy his own company by his poor decisions, I left the company and found a different line of work in the communications industry. Two months after I left Flooring America, and after 18 years of his being in business in that location, he went out of business.
Owner/Operator, 1985 - 2004
Gary Britt Floors, Angwin, Napa, Willits CA
This was the unofficial beginning of my self-employment, as I was operating under my father's C-15 Flooring and Floor Covering license in Angwin. It was about three years later when I decided to apply for and passed the test for my own license--600422, and received my hard card within two weeks of passing the test, which to this day has a squeaky-clean record. In 1990 I moved to Napa after my divorce, and installed for Blackney and Marsh. I was made aware that many investigations had been conducted into my floor covering history by the Better Business Bureau on behalf of the many judges and attorneys I had unknowingly been serving. The BBB called to inform me that an all-out investigation was in progress to find out if my company was merely a front for some other activity, because of the seemingly impossible cleanliness of my reputation and work history--there simply was not even a hint of any sort of complaint against me or my name by anyone at any time, with the BBB or the California State Contractor's License Board. Deeper investigation revealed that among every class of contractors in the entire system, mine was the only one of record to have zero complaints, where 1 had one complaint and two others had complaints, but not enough to trigger an investigation. By the end of the call, the BBB was requesting that I please join as a member so that they could recommend me to their other members. Shortly after this, I accepted a position at the soon to open “House Doctor” in Willits, where I engaged in Commercial and Residential flooring contracting. I was responsible for bidding on projects, working the sales floor, some warehouse operations, assisting installers with loading materials and directing them as to their install assignments, managing the jobsites, and was given permission to install at will. About a year after opening, the owner got into some sort of bind with his licensing, and so I moved back to Napa, installing for Carpet One.
Installer, 1978 – 1985
Carpet Country, Concord CA
This was when my father pulled me out of college to help him in his flooring business.
Laboratory Technician, 1976 – 1978
Dow Chemical – Laboratory Division, Walnut Creek, CA
I accepted an invitation from a friend of mine, the company’s PR man, Bob, to apply for a position in the Battery Project: I assisted my immediate supervisor with various laboratory tasks, which included logging data results in my own lab book. In the process of time, I moved from a temporary part time job into a vital full-time position, and designed faster and better ways of production and data logging. In time, I became painfully aware of my need to obtain a college degree in order to compete in the corporate world I was now immersed in. This is when I made the move to devote myself to full time college.
Assistant Installer, 1969 - 1976
Golden State Carpet Service, Concord, CA
Assisted my father with all phases of commercial and residential jobsite flooring and floor covering installations: Moving furniture, demolition, flooring and frame reconstruction/repairs, dry rot mitigation, moisture mitigation, floor prep, installation of carpet, vinyl, vct, vat, linoleum, laminates, and prefinished hardwood, on all types of flooring substrates. Here is where I learned the dying arts of hand sewing carpet seams, end-seaming wool berber carpets, and coving linoleum and vinyl floor covering. I was responsible for repacking the tool boxes, scraps, demolition debris, and old materials into the pick-up truck in such a way as to prevent losing any part of the load while hauling it from the jobsite. My father and I also rebuilt the foundation pony wall of one jobsite, leveled the flooring, repaired the water damaged areas, and then converted the one bathroom into two by incorporating the adjoining bedroom closet. I did all the wiring. In 1976 I joined the United States Marines to defend my country, and to learn helicopter mechanics.
Warehouseman Assistant, 1967 - 1969
Golden State Carpet Service, Concord, CA
WAREHOUSE: Assisted my father's warehouse manager: Measuring, cutting, preparing carpet and vinyl for jobsite installers; processing and stocking incoming materials shipments; labeling and locating stock for jobsite preparations; all forklift operations; various tasks related to keeping the warehouse neat, clean, and orderly.
Education History
C-15 Flooring & Floor Covering License, 1987
License Instruction School, Sacramento, CA
The test was all too easy, and I passed with flying colors. At the time, there was an Expedite Committee, who's purpose it was to expedite all license applications upon request, based upon the applicants’ situation and worthiness. I had my hard card within two weeks of passing the test, instead of the usual six months. License #600422.
4-year degree, Behavioral Science/Theology double major, 1980
Pacific Union College, Angwin, CA
I continued working my way through college, doing mostly floor covering, but also any kind of odd job that came my way. Actually, I started out as a Biology major, then switched to Behavioral Science and Theology, after receiving guidance counseling before the start of my second semester. Unfortunately, about halfway through my 3rd year of studies, my father called me home to help in his flooring business. I met someone soon after, got married, had children, and never found the time to continue my education.
Military Service
Private, 1976 - 1976
Marines—DD 214 Available
My MOS was helicopter mechanic. However, I received an honorable medical discharge due to physical injury sustained during boot camp.
Awards
C-15 Contractor License, 1987
Specialty license to repair/replace flooring and floor coverings.
Certifications
CNA (Certified Nurse's Assistant)
St. Helena Geriatric Hospital
Expired. This was training I received sometime in 1979. I stuck with it for about a year, then found that the work load placed on the CNAs was so heavy that patients were being treated like cattle. In the beginning, when workloads were reasonable, ALL of my patients began to show signs of marked improvement to their symptoms. However, in the end, patient improvements deteriorated in proportion to the added work load, and so I let my certification lapse in favor of full-time floor covering again.
