President/CEO September 2018 – September 2022

East End Cooperative Ministry (EECM), Pittsburgh, PA Founded in 1970 by 18 local faith communities, EECM provides emergency, transitional and recovery housing, a food pantry and hot meals for East End community members and EECM residents. Children and youth participate in educational programs, drug/alcohol and violence prevention programs, after school sports teams and a five-week summer camp. There is also a division that provides commercial sewing, landscaping and cleaning services. Throughout its 50 years, EECM has struggled financially and was in serious difficulty when I took over. Key accomplishments in first 42 months:

• Reorganized management and reviewed operations for cost efficiencies, resulting in over $500,000 savings/year.

• Converted all financial data and reporting back to MIP fund accounting software; completed 3 audits and 990s in one year; closed books on a monthly basis and distributed reports to operations staff for review.

• Paid off a $2 million line of credit and instituted loan policy to minimize interest costs.

• Rented excess space to three mission-similar nonprofits (412 Food Rescue, Repair the World, Catapult Pittsburgh).

• Initiated a 3-year strategic planning process, including reimagining the EECM mission, with an outside consultant.

• Restructured homeless services to increase number of beds and better serve population in need (there is a waiting list). This requires reconfiguring space to best serve the clientele and maximize revenues.

• Took on the bookkeeping for two additional nonprofits with excess capacity in the finance department, adding additional revenue of over $130,000 and diversifying revenue streams.

• In discussion with other mission-similar nonprofits re future programming and/or organizational synergies: employment training in food service sector; drug/alcohol, behavioral health, and other counseling services. Key Accomplishments:

• Designed improved financial systems for a start-up technology nonprofit that provided management with better information for critical decision making.

• Refinanced debt and provided business analysis for a growing for-profit company serving the public sector.

• Provided financial consulting to a private Pre-K-12 school for girls resulting in improved endowment reporting, a successful annual audit, and a more efficient and effective financial reporting system.

• Worked with two Pittsburgh foundations to develop emergency funding plan for the August Wilson Center; provided CFO services including monthly financial reports, annual audit, and cash flow management.

• Created an operations policy and procedure for an organization that works with children with special needs. Vice President and Chief Financial Officer November 2010 - September 2015 WQED Multimedia, Pittsburgh, PA

WQED is the first-ever community-sponsored educational television station in the country. Started in 1954, today it owns and operates two public broadcasting stations: WQED-TV and WQED-FM. Responsibilities included:

• Oversight for the Finance, Engineering, Facilities and Information Technology functions, including supervision of five financial, ten engineering, maintenance and one IT staff, plus an external IT consulting firm.

• Preparing and presenting monthly financial statements to the senior management team, board of directors, and board committees. Developing financial models for a five-year strategic plan; coordinating annual in-depth reports for federal, state and local funders. Work closely with Development Officer on endowment and capital campaigns.

• Supervising the planning, budgeting, construction, and relocation of office space and the subsequent leasing of available building space; directing the design and installation of external safety lighting and landscaping; managing the building façade transformation for an architecturally significant building. Key accomplishments:

• Reduced expenses by $1M annually by implementing operational efficiencies resulting in stronger financial stability.

• Developed new revenue generating initiatives to create additional earned revenue streams.

• Successfully implemented a new financial, purchase order, expense and time allocation system.

• Achieved expense savings by establishing purchasing function.

• Refinanced a $5.5M line of credit for a lower interest rate and closing costs, saving $25,000-$50,000 annually. Vice President and Chief Financial Officer December 2000 - July 2008 Manchester Bidwell Corporation (MBC), Pittsburgh, PA MBC is a nationally accredited and state licensed adult career training institution as well as a nationally recognized arts education program for public school students. Responsibilities included managing all financial aspects of a multi- organizational $12M budget, hiring and supervision of IT department, oversight for three facilities totaling 160,000 sq. ft., and coordinating corporate communications.

Key Accomplishments:

• Designed and installed a comprehensive accounting system for seven nonprofit entities that provided monthly elimination and consolidation; created a policies and procedures manual documenting all accounting and finance functions; developed a comprehensive budgeting process that enabled input and justification from operational staff; achieved expense savings by improving purchasing functions; reduced audit time from four months to six weeks.

• Refinanced a $6M real estate loan at 2.5% lower interest rate resulting in considerable savings. Saved $200,000 annually by outsourcing property management and maintenance to external company.

• Spearheaded two network systems: for staff and for students. Determined network design, selected vendors and managed installation. Initiated the development of a corporate intranet for more efficient internal communications. Directed the design and implementation of the MBC website. Led the installation of fiber in three buildings and the relocation of four off-site servers.

• Managed over $4M in federal, state and local grants for construction of a Horticultural and Agricultural Center; supervised construction and relocation of a $400,000 Chemistry Lab and a $40,000 Pharmacy Lab. SELECTED COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP
