I am definitely not an ordinary student, to begin I was born in México, first generation, I came to the United States 11 years ago, and began my studies at 32 years old. In January of 2017, I enrolled in the Adult Department of the Community College and within three months I obtained my GED certificate. At the beginning of 2018, I chose to transfer to the area of the college to obtain credits. Back then I was so disoriented that I did not even know what to do, until I realized that I could study Spanish, I immediately declared it as my major. I learned many lessons, including:

-Managing my time. I am the mother of three wonderful children, so knowing how to manage my time allowed me to achieve each of my goals.

-Creating short, medium, and long-term goals and achieve them one at a time.

-Understanding that I am a role model for my own children, for my friends and family, and for the people in my community.

They asked me if I wanted to fill out the applications to see if I could transfer to a university. I knew that they only accepted around 12% of the students, there would be no way to compete, but there was nothing to lose either, so I took the risk. What a surprise I received when I opened my email that March afternoon and found that acceptance letter from UCLA was in front of my inbox. At that moment I promised myself that I would do my best, and show that they hadn’t made a mistake in choosing me. My BA is in Spanish, Community and Culture because I want to share my knowledge with people around me. I am fortunate to be part of a rich and extensive culture that is worth exploring and spreading.

At the university, I have received life lessons that have contributed to making me a better person. For example, I was unaware of the great needs that our Latino community faces due to lack of support, information, and motivation. I have participated in three internships: at CARECEN, an organization that supports immigrants and Latinx people in this country. I supported US residents from different Latin American countries prepare for their interview to obtain America citizenship; in Latina Republic an organization focused on the promotion of the human rights of the Latinx people, I tutored a fifth-grade student for 10 weeks during the academic year 2022; and in the summer I served as a co-director of the Latina Republic book club. In addition to enjoying these activities, I confirmed that I am a person capable of adapting to changes in terms of space and context. I applied for the PhD in Spanish at UC Irvine, I like challenges. I am completely certain that I can achieve what I propose an I believe that I meet the necessary requirements to be part of the program. I know that I have the strength, the ability, and the skills to obtain that doctoral degree in Spanish. I am a persevering, competent woman who is dedicated to fulfilling her goals and objectives. I look forward to be part of that small percentage of Latina women who obtain a doctorate and to motivate other people to continue their academic preparation.

Definitivamente no soy una estudiante ordinaria, para empezar nací en México, primera generación, llegué a Estados Unidos hace 11 años e inicié mis estudios a los 32 años. En enero del año 2017 me inscribí en el Departamento de adultos del colegio comunitario y a los tres meses obtuve mi certificado de GED.

A principios del año 2018 opté por transferirme al área del colegio para obtener créditos. En ese entonces estaba tan desorientada que ni siquiera sabía que hacer, hasta que me percaté de que podía estudiar español, inmediatamente lo declaré como mi espacialidad. Obtuve muchos aprendizajes, entre ellos:

-Manejar y administrar mi tiempo. Soy madre de 3 maravillosos hijos, así que saber cómo administrar mi tiempo me permitió ir logrando cada uno de mis objetivos.

-Tener metas a corto, mediano y a largo plazo e irlas cumpliendo una a la vez.

-Comprender que soy un modelo a seguir para mis propios hijos, para mis amigos y familiares y para la gente de mi comunidad.

Me preguntaron si quería llenar las aplicaciones para ver si lograba la transferencia a alguna universidad. Sabía que solamente aceptaban entre en 10 y 12% de los estudiantes, no habría manera de competir, casi era un suicidio académico, pero tampoco había nada que perder, de manera que asumí el riesgo. Vaya sorpresa que recibí, al abrir mi correo electrónico aquella tarde de marzo, estaba frente a mí esa carta de aceptación de UCLA. En ese momento me prometí dar lo mejor de mí, demostrar que no se habían equivocado al escogerme. Mi licenciatura es Español, Comunidad y Cultura porque deseo compartir los conocimientos que tengo con las personas que me rodean, tengo la fortuna de ser parte de una cultura rica y extensa que vale la pena ser explorada y difundida.

En la universidad, he recibido lecciones de vida que han contribuido a que sea una mejor persona. Por ejemplo, desconocía las grandes necesidades que enfrenta nuestra comunidad latina por falta de apoyo, información y motivación. He realizado tres voluntariados. En CARECEN apoyé a residentes estadounidenses originarios de diferentes países de latinoamerica a prepararse para su entrevista para obtener la ciudadanía americana y, en Latina Republic fui tutora de una estudiante de quinto grado por 10 semanas, asímismo en la temporada de verano participé como co-directora del club de lectura. Además de haber disfrutado esas actividades confirmé que soy una persona capaz de adaptarme a los cambios en cuanto a espacio y contexto, me gustan los retos. Tengo la plena certeza de que puedo lograr lo que me propongo y considero que reúno los requisitos necesarios para formar parte del programa (PhD Spanish) en la Universidad de California Irvine, para el cual envié la solicitud en enero del presente año. Sé que tengo la fortaleza, la capacidad y las habilidades para obtener ese título doctoral en español. Soy perseverante, competente, una mujer que se dedica a cumplir sus metas y objetivos. Anhelo formar parte de ese pequeño porcentaje de mujeres latinas que obtiene un doctorado y motivar a otras personas a que continúen preparándose académicamente.
