National Passenger Rail Corporation - Amtrak
LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEER & YARDMASTER - MARCH 1987 - NOVEMBER 2012
As an Engineer I was entrusted with and responsible for safe operation of hi-tech multimillion dollar equipment operating in accordance and compliance with rules from Amtrak, State and Local authorities, NORAC, D.O.T. and F.R.A. Situational awareness, critical thinking and the ability to make decisions while under pressure are tested daily. Not to mention the hundreds of people that relied on you to transport them safely and on-time.
Participating in the roll out of C.R.M. (Crew Resource Management) Training, in a corporate vs. union environment was an invaluable experience.
As a Yardmaster, I was responsible for all rail operations in Sunnyside Yard, L.I.C., NY. In addition, I directly supervised up to 60 union employees in an eight hour shift, while interacting with ten other departments, able to deliver clear and succinct verbal communication that facilities real time decision making. Able to adapt quickly to fluid situations that demanded firm decision making and timely action through leadership and the ability to foster relationships.
I also functioned as the Chairperson for the Regional Operation Redblock Committee. Operation Redblock is a labor-developed, company adopted program to cause the cultural shift to a drug and alcohol free workplace. As Chairperson, I spearheaded the efforts to partner with company officials and engage with union employees in order to reverse long standing cultural trends and cause irreversible cultural transformation.
I was also selected to become a Certified Move SMART Trainer. Move SMART is an ergonomic safety training course based on the principles of the martial arts. I delivered trainings to employees, both union and management, over a two year period.
