To Whom it May Concern,

Thank you for giving me an opportunity to present myself to you. As you look through my curriculum vitae, please notice the following, which are my proudest accomplishments:

As an electrical engineer for 35 years, I had the opportunity to lead a great radar team at General Dynamics. Our team took on a project three years behind schedule, and worked hard and complemented each other so well that we finished the project two years ahead of schedule. I am proud to say that I was able to rally the team through the combined efforts of engineers, vendors and management.

As CEO for S.E. Pacific Corporation and FSGP, Inc. I was able to meet the goals of the companies. The profit margin increased and maintained constantly for several years in a row.

As a high school principal for 12 years, I was able to bring St. Ignatius from its humble beginnings to become one of the top 50 Catholic Schools in the nation for five consecutive years.

As a scout master for Troop 304, I successfully led our scouts to earn the National Gold Medallion Award. I am proud to say that 90% of our scouts achieved the Eagle Scout rank before graduating from high school.

As an active professional engineer, I am currently taking and finishing up my graduate mathematics courses at Texas A&M - Commerce. I work hard to maintain a 4.0 GPA in my pursuit of both a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and a Masters in Mathematics.

My experience as a high school principal for 12 years provided me with leadership skills in education and academics that is beneficial to students. My experiences as CEO of several corporations provide me the knowledge to manage, supervise and coordinate programs and activities within the departments. Aside from academic and work experiences, I am a published writer of Vietnamese short stories. My literary accomplishments include publications in multiple Vietnamese literary journals and magazines. I received the California Congressional Honor Award for "Writing on America". I was the Honor Nominee for the U.S. Congressional Award. I have also received BSA 's National Silver Beaver Award by contributing to our local Longhorn Council in Fort Worth, Texas.

Again, thank you for giving me this opportunity to talk about my proud accomplishments.

Recommendation letter 2

To whom it may concern,

I am writing this at the request of Victor Nguyen. I first came to know Victor in my role of Head of School at Country Day School of Arlington in Texas from 2004-2007.

Victor and I worked on a number of projects together, including his opening and heading a private school in Fort Worth, St. Ignatius College Preparatory School.

I can speak to Victor's expertise and character on a number of levels because of our experience over the years. In a nutshell, no one I have known exceeds Victor in those qualities you would look for in a person seeking to guide students and to lead.

Victor is kind, competent, thoughtful, energetic, willing to go the last mile and beyond. He is pitch perfect with students at a wide variety of levels, and with parents and teachers, he is intuitive and nuanced.

Victor will make a great contribution in the graduate school at Texas A and M, and you will be able to be proud of hid association with the school. His family members are all professional and leaders in the community. I have watched their interactions and efforts with great admiration since we met in 2004.

I believe that you have received the information below about Victor in other communications. I can vouch for its authenticity, I cannot recommend Victor to you more highly. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Graduate Admissions Committee

The Graduate School

Texas A & M University-Commerce

Commerce, TX 75429-3011

Dear Admissions Committee:

This letter is written to recommend Thang Duc (Victor) Nguyen for admission to your doctoral program.

I have known Victor for seven years, both as a friend and professionally. My friendship with him came about when my husband, Tom Porter, began teaching at St. Ignatius College Prep High School seven years ago under Victor’s principalship. St. Ignatius is an unusual school. It was begun eight years ago by the Nguyen family, refugees from North Vietnam who came to America after the fall of Saigon. Having been sponsored originally by a Lutheran church in Iowa, then moving to California and finally settling in Texas, the family of fourteen prospered, with the twelve siblings becoming successful doctors and engineers. Under the direction of father Nguyen, they decided to found an all-volunteer Catholic high school to “give back” to this country, with Victor as principal. Neither Victor nor any of the faculty accepts a salary; the students –now numbering 30—are taught by members of the Nguyen family, who take time out from their professions to teach, as well as people like my husband, a retired English professor, and others of like mind impressed by these people and their mission. The student-teacher ratio is 2:1.

The student community is tightly knit. The school day runs from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, with breaks for lunch and study halls. The students are assigned duties-- cleaning the buildings, installing and maintaining equipment, and improving the grounds. It is academically rigorous, requiring double the credit hours required of high schools by Texas state regulations, including four years of accelerated math and science. Other school activities include scouting and adventuring, camping out, and representing St. Ignatius in the larger Ft. Worth community.

Under Victor’s leadership, the school has thrived. Many of the juniors and seniors are co-enrolled at the University of Texas-Arlington, taking English, algebra and calculus, science and social science courses, in which they routinely earn A’s. In 2010 St. Ignatius placed in the “Top 50 Catholic High Schools in the Nation.” All of its graduates have gone on to college and are doing well. I give Victor much—if not most—of the credit for this success. He is tireless in his devotion to students. It is not unusual for him to stay long into the evening hours tutoring individual students in calculus or physics (he is an engineer by profession). He is an enthusiastic scout leader, having won top scouting honors himself, and organizes many weekend scouting adventures for the students, in which both he and his wife participate. He has driven groups of students across the country to compete in national scouting events, and he regularly takes several students to Vietnam in the summertime to learn about that culture first-hand. Both faculty and students hold him in the utmost respect and affection.

All of this I observed from a distance as the spouse of a faculty member. Last spring, having retired myself by that time from a thirty-year career as an English professor, the last twenty-four of them at UT-Arlington, I joined the ranks of St. Ignatius faculty, teaching a Creative Writing and Performance class. Watching Victor close-at-hand, interacting with students as a teacher, mentor, and advisor, I was even more impressed with his dedication, his skill, and his passion. It is typical of his commitment to the mission of leading this school that he wants to return to school to get his doctorate in counseling, to give him even more skills at working closely with the young people in his charge.

On a personal level, having taught graduate courses myself throughout my career, I can attest that Victor has the potential to make an excellent doctoral student. He is intellectually gifted, determined, and disciplined. I’m convinced that there’s nothing he can’t do, once he sets his mind to it. One example: Though his training is as an engineer and scientist, he also blogs and writes stories about his experiences in the United States and has a large readership in Vietnam. Last year he entered one of his stories on the theme “What American Means to Me” in a national competition and won third place.

I recommend Victor Nguyen for your program with great confidence. I hope you will give his candidacy your most serious consideration.

Sincerely,

Laurin Porter

Professor Emeritus

Graduate School Admissions Committee

Texas A & M University - Commerce

Dear Members of the Graduate Admissions Committee:

I take a great pleasure to write this letter of reference on behalf of Victor Thang Nguyen who is applying for matriculation in the Graduate Program at Texas A&M. I have known Victor as a friend and a collaborator over the last 25 years. For me, his decision to return to school is extraordinary and could set a great example for many aspiring adults who want to earn a college degree, especially a graduate degree, but have been reluctant to do so.

Victor is a man of many talents and exceptionally smart. He has demonstrated his ability to achieve whatever he sets his mind to do such as being a professional engineer, CEO of business companies, and recently, a successful principal of a college preparatory school. Victor also has co-authored with me on a few publications concerning the adaptation of Vietnamese Americans including:

Tran, T.V., & Nguyen, T.D. (1994). Gender and satisfaction with the host society among Indochinese refugees. International Migration Review, 28, 323-337.

Tran, T.V., Manalo, V., & Nguyen, V.T.D. (2007). Nonlinear relationship between length of residence and depression in a community-based sample of Vietnamese Americans. International Journal of Social Psychiatry, 53(1), 85-95.

Victor Nguyen possesses and demonstrates some exceptional qualifications to become a successful graduate student. He is highly motivated and focused. He is not afraid to ask difficult questions and search for the right answers. He confronts problems with both rational and emotional strategies and is extremely persistent and determined to get the job done at the best of his ability.

I strongly recommend Victor Nguyen to your graduate program without any reservations. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Thanh V. Tran, Ph.D., MSSW Professor
