Makueni County, in collaboration with Makueni District hospital’s comprehensive care clinic, mother child health (MCH), Makueni District social work department, Makueni District commissioners’ Office, the residence and Makueni Dairy Co-operative society. The aim was to promote the use of Agricultural product milk particularly milk and milk products, which are nutrient dense and healthy rather than sodas which are energy dense. Malnourished children attending the MCH and the People living with HIV/AIDs attending the comprehensive care centre advised on good nutrition and its significance.

Food and Nutrition survey for Children Under five year at Makueni County Hospital, Makueni Dairy and Makueni County Commissioners office, Makueni County, Kenya[ 11/2014 to 1/2015]. As Food scientist and Dairy Technologist, I was leading in identifying the various milk and milk products produced by Makueni dairy. This was significant in identifying the diversified milk products availed to them to access. The survey was accessing the caregivers/mothers delivering milk to Makueni Dairy and had children under five years old, on their food choices and preference for the children. From the Survey it come out clearly that caregivers/mothers were selling all milk milked in a day milk to the dairy, not leaving any milk to the children but instead use the income earned to buy cereals, sugar, bread and sodas for the children and the household as well. The caregivers/mothers food preference was key in determining food consumption patterns, dietary choices for the children. This will inform the nutritional status of the children, from the survey it was clear that the malnutrition rates were high and it was attributed to bad food choices and preferences among the caregivers/mothers’ practice. The survey results and discussion came out clearly that the caregivers/mothers had inadequate knowledge on various foods (milk) and the nutritional composition. They prefer energy dense foods like cereals and cereal products, rice, bread and sugar based diets as compared to nutrient dense and well-balanced milk with very high levels of palatability and absorption to the children. There was need for creating awareness and sensitizing the caregivers/mothers on nutrient dense feeds than energy dense food for the children to reduce malnutrition cases and promote healthy growth children for a healthy population. Hence, address the gap through various interventions using public private partnership model, nutrition sensitive and specific approaches.

PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED

The Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS), Nakuru [15-17/2/2022] Livestock Emergency Guidelines and Standards (LEGS) is a set of international guidelines and standards for designing, implementing, and evaluating livestock interventions to help people affected by humanitarian crises. LEGS is based

on three livelihoods objectives: to provide rapid assistance, to protect livestock

assets, and to rebuild the livestock assets of crisis-affected communities. LEGS

supports the saving of both lives and livelihoods through two key strategies:

• LEGS helps identify the most appropriate livestock interventions during

emergencies.

• LEGS provides Standards, Key actions, and Guidance notes for these

interventions based on good practice.

Championing Animal welfare programme in the Sub-County through LEGS

Because LEGS is based on humanitarian principles and law, its starting point is the welfare of people. Although LEGS is not based on animal welfare objectives, many LEGS interventions lead to improved animal welfare, thus contributing to the ‘five freedoms’ commonly used as a framework for assessing animal welfare:

1. Freedom from hunger and thirst – by providing ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor.

2. Freedom from discomfort – by providing an appropriate environment, including shelter and a comfortable resting area

3. Freedom from pain, injury, or disease – by preventing or rapidly diagnosing and treating the problem.

4. Freedom to express normal behavior – by providing sufficient space, proper facilities, and company of the animal’s own kind

5. Freedom from fear and distress – by ensuring conditions and treatment that avoid mental suffering.
