At the beginning of the shift, I assign the incoming nurses their phones, and update the tracking board with the nurse’s contact information. As auxiliary departments call, I redirect them to the appropriate staff member utilizing a multiline telephone. When patients are in need of assistance, I respond to their call light and notify their nurse, to make them aware of the patient’s request or needs. As patients are admitted the unit, I arrive them in the system as needed. The patient’s medical chart is assembled with pertinent documents pertaining to their visit, such as their consent forms, medical labels, face sheets, and progress reports. When the unit requires supplies, a request is sent to the Supply Department for the items, and the facility’s Maintenance Department is notified about any repairs that the unit requires. When a patient expires, I gather expiration documents for the physician and nursing staff to complete, and submit a request for the patient to be transported to the morgue. When patients are transferred to another unit or discharged, their medical chart is disassemble and sent to the receiving unit or, their documents are organized for medical records to collect after being discharged. Upon being discharged, I submit a cab or EMS request for the patient to be transported home. At the end of my shift I give report to the incoming clerk about important unit updates, such as pending discharges, and admits.
