Staff Nurse Experiences:

Queen Charlottes and Chelsea Hospital

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Level 3) September 2017- April 2021

Having spent over 3 years at Queen Charlottes and St Mary’s hospitals, I have grown as a paediatric and neonatal nurse, as well as an individual. Within my first few months as a newly qualified nurse at Queen Charlottes, I had taken opportunities to develop my knowledge and understanding of neonatal nursing as well as my nursing skills by working closely with senior nurses, being exposed to many neonatal complications and understanding the rationale behind why we care for some patients in particular ways. During the first few months I was able complete many of the competencies including; CPAP training, medications, accessing UVC’s/UAC’s etc. In addition to this, on some occasions I looked after neonates with complicated cases which included caring for cardiac, respiratory and neurological conditions. With every patient I have cared for in ITU/HDU my confidence level has increased. Furthermore, once I had completed the neonatal intensive care course, I was able to concentrate on caring for sick and complex neonates, ventilated patients, those of which required nitric oxide and specialist treatment, for instance, cooling therapy. As a neonatal trained nurse with Neonatal Life Support training, I attend deliveries for premature or sick neonates, as well as, transfering high dependency patients to their local hospitals. As a senior staff nurse I am confident in relaying information within the multidisciplinary team. One of my strongest skills is communication which is a very key aspect of nursing. My documentation remains to a good standard in line with the NMC and CQC compliance. Working with critically ill patients has allowed me to appreciate the importance of communication and delegation where applicable. Overall I have had a lot of exposer in Imperial’s neonatal units, which have not only allowed me to grow as a senior staff nurse, but also enabled me to develop my skills, knowledge and understanding of my profession.

Community experience 03/2021- Ongoing

Working with different complex care community agencies has enhanced my nursing skills in the community setting as a lone worker. I have gained skills of looking after paediatric patients at home who are tracheostomy and ventilator dependent. This has enabled me to better my skills on looking after Gastrostomy stoma sites and tracheostomy sites in the home setting. Working in the community has given me confidence in handling emergency situations as a lone worker i.e. emergency insertion of the tracheostomy and the vigilance required in the role. Overall I have learnt to transfer skills acquired in a hospital settings in the community setting, this has improved my communication skills and decision making skills as a lone worker. Working in the community has also reinforced my skills of integrated family centred care and its importance in the child’s overall well-being.

Student Nurse Experiences

Coppetts Wood Primary School and Children’s centre

Children’s centre 08/12/2014- 19/12/2014

Working with the children’s centre team in Barnet borough has given me a greater understanding of paediatric nursing and a greater understanding of the multi-disciplinary team. Over the 2 weeks I shadowed health visitors who came into the centre once a week, I also worked with the speech and language therapist. I was able to develop communication skills working with the children and also being able to work with their parents and carers.

Oak Lodge School

Learning disabilities January 2015- March 2015

My insight into working with patients with learning disabilities helped me develop and improve my nursing skills. Working at Oak Lodge School made me understand and develop different ways to communicate with patients, this is because most of the patients at Oak lodge were moderately to severely disable and were not able to communicate easily. I learnt how to use some Makaton (sign language for those with learning disabilities) as well as how to care for these patients, for instance, feeding them, using a hoist for toileting etc.

North Middlesex hospital

Paediatric general inpatients July 2015-September 2015

I was given an opportunity to work at North Middlesex Hospital in a general paediatric inpatients ward. I experienced inserting Nasal gastric tubes, flushing and removing cannula’s, basic medicine administration, setting up a nasal gastric feed as well as providing care for children and supporting their families/carers. I got a further understanding of the roles of the members of the multi-disciplinary team and given an opportunity to work with them. During this placement I continued developing my caring skills and how to remain calm in stressful situations. My communication skills (with the patient and their family/carer) was greatly improved as well as carrying out instructions safely and confidently.

Barnet hospital

Neonatal Ward September 2015 – November 2015

Whilst working in Barnet Hospital’s starlight neonatal unit. I had the opportunities to care for incubated and intubated babies. I experienced nasal gastric feeding; changing and performing personal care on babies in incubators; taking bloods and checking bilirubin levels to determine whether the baby is jaundice and monitoring blood sugar levels. Working very closely with parents at this unit greatly improved my communication skills as well as carrying out instructions safely and confidently, for instance giving mothers feeding advice and helping them care for their incubated baby.

Barnet Hospital

Paediatric Ward February 2016 – May 2016

I had an opportunity to work at Barnet Hospitals Galaxy ward, a general paediatric inpatients ward. My general nursing skills were further enhanced as I experienced drawing up and administering medicine. I also took part in preparing patients for theatre and following their procedure as well as aiding in their recovery by providing care for the children and supporting their families. I experienced working as part of a strong multi-disciplinary team getting an insight of how different health professionals can effectively work together to provide the best care for children.

Crowthorne Care services August 2016-September 2016

Mental Health and Learning Disability supported living home

For my elective placement I took it up on myself to apply for a mental health healthcare setting as I felt as a paediatric student nurse I had not been given an opportunity to have an insight in the mental health field. At this placement I had the opportunity to work with Adults with mental health and learning disabilities with complex needs. I was involved in patient assessments, shadowing management as well as caring for the patients and assisting in medications and aiding them to live as normal life as possible. This opened my eyes to transitional care and the differences between the child healthcare systems going into adults. I was also able to attend safeguarding meetings. This placement enabled me to enhance my communication skills.

Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (Stanmore)

Orthopaedics- Theatre (Recovery) November 2016-December 2016

Working in a specialist hospital gave me an insight that is different from working in a general or neonatal setting. Orthopaedics has been very interesting. I was given an opportunity to work in theatres where I spent time in: theatre, recovery and anaesthetics. As such, I became familiar with the typical orthopaedic diagnoses and treatments, including medications. I worked closely with the consultants, surgeons, anaesthetists, SHO’s, paediatricians, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. This opportunity allowed me to gain advanced knowledge on airway management and the ABCDE assessments. Overall, this placement gave me a good understanding of orthopaedics, helped improve my nursing skills and maintaining a professional relationship with the multi-disciplinary team and patients.

Watford General Hospital

Neonatal ward January 2017-March 2017

Whilst at Watford neonatal unit, I was given the opportunity to enhance my knowledge in neonatal care. I gained a lot of knowledge of what a neonate is, common neonatal issues and treatment such as jaundice, hypoglycaemia and respiratory distress in the new-born. I also gained knowledge on resuscitating a new-born and airway management as well as developmental care and why it is important. This was done through supported study with my mentors and attending study days such as; nursery nurse study days, Airway management study day, IV study day and developmental care study session. Furthermore, I was able to attend deliveries of premature neonates, and neonates born with complications requiring blood transfusion which I had the opportunity to witness and discuss with doctors. Having these experiences made me thrive for more neonatal knowledge, hence why in future I would like to become a neonatal nurse.

Other Experiences:

Hillingdon Hospital- Neonatal Unit

Given my continual interest in neonatal nursing through my neonatal unit placements, I decided to apply to Hillingdon hospital as a bank healthcare assistant. I then contacted the neonatal unit and expressed my interests of working on the unit. I gained a lot of neonatal knowledge and confidence as an individual and a healthcare assistant sorely responsible for the patients allocated to me, this opportunity gave me strength and self-assurance. I learnt the importance of time management and organisation as most babies medications, cares and/or examinations had to be carried out at regular intervals thus keeping an accurate record was important.
