Chengalpattu Government Medical College Hospital is the District Headquarters Hospital of Kancheepuram District, Tamil Nadu. It is the only governmental tertiary health care centre in this district and serves as the referral unit for several secondary care centres and Primary Health Centres (PHC's) in the area with 1100 beds. This 50-year-old institution was the 6th of its kind to be started in Tamil Nadu. There are main operation theatres (OT) and several minor OTs. Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Ophthalmology departments have separate OTs, while the ENT and the surgical super specialities (plastic surgery, neurosurgery, paediatric surgery, vascular surgery) share main OT. Intensive Care Units for Surgery, Medicine, Paediatric, and Neonatology are present in the respective departments.

The Post graduate Residency Training Program consists of a 3-year educational continuum approved by the Medical Council of India.

The residency curriculum begins with basic training in managing patients in the operating suite and perioperative period. Subspecialty rotations begin as early as the second half of first year and tailored to individual residents' interests. During the final year, residents receive additional exposure to the various subspecialties and have greatly increased leadership responsibilities.
