Responsible for assisting nurses/doctors in general patient care, I draw blood, start IV’s, do EKG’s, and perform vein puncture and the insertion of a saline lock and Flush. I apply and discontinue the initial IV site dressing care according to VA Hospital policy. I worked in Washington DC and Maryland as a nursing assisting/Med. Surg. Tech in which I went to trade school to receive my training. I have worked for over 20 year in this field. During these times I have done vital signs, Glucometer and changed dressings. I have also clean and stock rooms between patients, I start IV’s and draw blood and package it for lab samples and then placed order in CPRS while working in the fusion clinic. I am also certified in CPR and certify as a Tech. I monitor blood glucose with monitoring device; Oro-pharyngeal suctioning, discontinuation of peripheral IV’s, maintains continuous NG and gastrostomy tube feedings, assists with diagnostic exams/procedures urinary catheterization including insertion, maintenance and discontinuation, completion and recording of vital signs including apical pulse and blood pressures and participates in admission/discharge process. I perform phlebotomy services including labeling specimens, properly storing lab specimens and preparing specimens for transfer via lab courier all documentation is placed into the computer; I also perform standard 12-lead EKG using multi-channel EKG machines including running rhythm strips. I sometimes am called on to an observer for one-on-one suicide watch. I assist the professional nurse with the care of the patient and smooth functioning of the area of assignment. When a Doctor gives an order I am able to carry it out, I also work as a unit clerk and I am able to take Doctors orders.
