A railroad engineer's primary duty is operating a train. Engineers watch instruments related to essential train functions, such as instruments that measure air pressure, speed and battery power, and work the train's controls, including air brakes and throttles. The engineer must constantly be aware of factors that affect the locomotive's movement, such as the number of cars, their contents, the weather and the rail conditions. Engineers work alongside conductors and other railroad employees to keep the train and its contents safe, stick to a timetable and follow railroad regulations.
