I served as secretarial support for attorneys in the Capital Habeas Unit (CHU). The attorneys in CHU are public defenders who defend clients who have been sentenced to death or who are serving life sentences.
The primary focus in defending such clients is centered on whether the clients received a fair trial according to the Bills of Rights. Therefore, finding any relief for these clients entailed collecting, organizing, and analyzing voluminous documents/information seeking evidence to be used in the client’s appeal. The collected data can be used in several ways, i.e., as the client’s social history, documents to be sent to an expert for further analysis or stored into a data base (In-Magic and Summation) to be retrieved later. My role here was to receive, organize and analyze the document/information for the attorneys. As I have worked with a paralegal in this unit and this type of work are areas in which a paralegal routinely does. I gained even more experience in gathering, organizing, and summarizing documents which eventually were used as an attorney’s work product. I summarized clerks and reporter’s transcripts. I searched boxes of evidence looking for pertinent information, e.g., inconsistencies in jurors’ personal questionnaires. Upon completion of my analysis, I presented my findings by writing a letter or a memorandum to the appropriate person. Other times, I presented my findings via a chart, table or in person. Other duties included scanning, coding, indexing, and retrieving documents/information for trials and appeals. As secretarial support, routinely I typed and proofread an array of documents such as trial pleadings, appeals, memos, letters, etc. I transcribed, answered telephones, faxed and xeroxed documents. Routinely, I spoke to clients who called to inquire about their cases or who called simply to talk to a caring person. Therefore, I had to process the ability to speak intelligently as well as sympathetically which I believe provided further service to the clients.

As a Children’s Social Worker (CSW) my duties were to manage a caseload of neglected and/or abused children. It was my duty to investigate and assess the family in question and determine if neglect and/or abuse was present in the home. After the initial assessment of the family’s situation, it was my duty to determine if the child could remain safely at home or should the child be removed from the home and be placed in protective custody. In this regard, I had to know and exercise the policies and regulations governing child abuse. If I determined that some level of abuse and/or neglect had occurred in the home, then I had to write a report to the Children’s Court with my recommendation for the family. Routinely, I wrote an array of court reports which had to be submitted timely to the Children’s Dependence Court Judge. I was responsible for documenting case plans and case activity. On occasion, when the issues of the family required an adjustment in my recommendation(s), I had to adjust the case plan of the family accordingly. I referred family members to community agencies for counseling, parenting education, drug rehabilitation, domestic violence, etc. I am experienced in working with families in their homes and with families of different cultures. Routinely, I responded to immediate home calls; coordinated with law enforcement; interviewed a child, a parent, or a relative regarding abuse, neglect, sexual abuse, substance abuse and domestic violence; removed a child from his/her home; placed a child in foster care; worked with hostile/angry/dysfunctional parents; drove a family to Court and to receive resources; assessed the home of a relative to determine the potential to be a caretaker and testified in court. The job of a CSW required having the ability to work independently but also do case conferences with the supervising social worker and upper management was necessary for the more complex cases. As a CSW, and throughout my tenure as a CSW, I regularly collaborated with individuals in the medical profession (doctors, nurses, therapists and all hospital staff, law enforcement officers and school officials. Other duties involved bringing in other agencies for which the client would receive additional services to help remedy their situation. This entailed regularly having meetings with the client and the servicing agency. It was my job to oversee the meeting to ensure that the family received services according to my recommendation(s) to the Court and per the order(s) returning from the Court.

My primary duty as a Resident Services Site Assistant (RSSA) was to determine whether Section 8 applicants were eligible to receive financial assistance for residing in public housing. To determine if a Section 8 applicant was eligible for Section 8 housing, it was necessary to have strong interviewing skills and a keen sense for details. During the interview, I gathered personal information from the applicant to ascertain whether an applicant’s family size, income history, health status, their ability to pay rent, and other relevant information met the qualifications for the Section 8 program. Further, as a RSSA, I calculated the applicant’s annual income to determine whether their income fell within the Section 8 income guidelines for the program. Once this was done, I determined the portion of rent that the applicant would pay and the portion that the Department of Housing and Urban Development would pay. After this was done, I prepared the Section contract for the applicant. Other duties included verifying the information given by the applicant with employers, public and private health and welfare agencies and others. I prepared leasing documents and weekly and monthly reports. I prepared follow-up correspondence and managed the case until all personal information was received.
