RESUME - Rosa Chan,

In Costa Rica, additional Accomplishments

As Director of the School of Social Work of the Universidad Latina for 5 years, 1:

• reviewed & updated study plans of the degree,

• promoted relationships with other Schools of Social Work of Foreign Universities (ie, Southern California University & Jane Adams SW School of Chicago) - in an effort to update the perception of the specialties of Clinical Social Work, School Social in workplaces, etc. New competences and new levels of professional performance were my results

• helped the School of Social Work of Universidad Latina de Costa Rica to grow rapidly. The school experienced a sustained increase in enrollment - doubled & tripled. Currently, the school has the least unemployed graduates of Social Work professionals in Costa Rica.

Some others innovative initiatives in the Social area that I developed in Costa Rica

• Founder of the first Senior Day Center in CR using a participatory methodology in 1976 in the Canton of Goicoechea during my tenure as extension coordinator of the University of Costa Rica, Social Work School.

• Publications: 1) a Book that is currently under review, but soon will published; 2) an Article of my experience, in a Journal of Gerontology from a School of Social Work at the Univ of Canada.

• Founder of the first Home for Alcoholics in Community & the Committee for Rehabilitation of Alcoholics (CREA). The organization later decided to hand it over to the First Lady of Costa Rica to procure the start of the work in CR of the International organization - CREA - that treated - not only alcoholism, but also other addictions.

• Organizer in coordination - with the Maria Reina Catholic Parish, in San Jose, Costa Rica - as a professional practice center of the Social Work School of the Latina University (the 1st Center for the treatment of Mental Health and Social Welfare in a community), as part of comprehensive care to overcome Mental Health problems and Poverty in CR, 2015

• Promoter of Training Courses for Entrepreneurship and Cooperatives for men & women Clients of the Treatment Center,(1) for establishment of small entrepreneur businesses. 2015

(1)NOTE: CR actually have a magnificent generalized health system and in a population of 5 million inhabitants. There are drug recovery government Program, homes, and medication is given in hospitals for mental disorders within a medicalized vision of mental health treatment. However, there is a lack of Community Clinics where mental health issues and social welfare are treated. The other variables are poverty, unemployment, lack of job training within a vision of comprehensive treatment. Hence, the importance of the experience, given that there are 1.3 million people who require mental health and comprehensive care, which considers the variables of poverty, family conflicts, lack of decent housing, etc.
