Session Committees and Responsibilities
Christian Education Works cooperatively with the Director of Christian Education and FPC Preschool Director to nurture and support individual journeys of faith, offer Christian guidance and provide learning opportunities for people of all ages.
Select study materials and curriculum for the Sunday school, Lenten and Advent small groups, Bible studies, adult education programs and Confirmation & Communion classes.
Assist in recruitment of teachers and study leaders
Explore and promote ways to engage more people in opportunities for faith development
One elder on the committee will serve on the FPC Preschool Board and be a liaison to session and the committee. He/she will assist with coordination and timing of activities including fund raising events. This elder may also meet with the Preschool Parent Board.
Organize, promote and run the annual Advent Festival and Vacation Bible School (VBS).
Finance and Property Along with the Officers of the Corporation, oversees the care of the church’s physical structures, grounds, revenues (existing and potential) and expenses. Subcommittees have followed guidelines from the former Board of Trustees. They included:
A.Manage Investments and Bryant Kirkland Fund (Investment Committee)
B.Formulate annual church budget (Budget Committee)
C.Monitor and report income and expenses throughout year (Count Team)
D.Guide maintenance and renovations of the buildings and grounds (Buildings and Grounds Committee)
E.Conduct an annual Stewardship campaign (Stewardship Committee)
F.Develop additional sources of income for the church (Development Committee)
Governance Makes recommendations regarding governance to assist session in increasing its effectiveness, efficiency and ability to guide and govern the life of the congregation. “Support a covenant life marked by a disciplined concern for order in the church according to the Word of God” from Bk of Order
Prepare a Manual of Administrative Operations (that is, a Handbook)
Recommend general governance procedures for session.
Assist other committees in the preparation of their charters.
Recommend committees of session and their duties.
Annually review/update charter of the Governance committee
Personnel Oversees all church staff members in consultation with the Senior Pastor
A.Conduct annual reviews of staff members
B.Make salary/ benefit recommendations to Session and Finance Committee
C.Provide guidance and support to staff and, if necessary, mediate conflicts among staff.

Nominating Recruits members to serve as Elders and Deacons.Presents names for next year’s Nominating Committee at December congregational meeting.
A.Request nominations and volunteers from the congregation after disseminating information as to the requirements of the positions.
B.Review qualifications of nominees and select candidates.
C.Contact candidates as to their willingness to serve and their understanding of the requirements of the positions in order to create a slate for each board.
D.Notify the congregation of the candidates’ names and their backgrounds.
Long Range Planning Formulates on-going, three-year, mission and ministry plans for Session’s consideration.
A.Determine needs most critical to church growth.
B.Identify staff and volunteers needed to enact plans
C.Examine and report on financial impact of plans
D.Endeavor to prioritize members’ wants and needs utilizing conversations with members and staff, surveys and research from a variety of sources.
E.Periodically review the church’s Mission Statement, recommending a new one when appropriate.
F.Reports to session on the progress made towards established goals.

Youth Ministry Along with appropriate staff, guide the church’s ministry to young people. Serve as an advisory group to the youth director or pastor. Provide support for youth events including leadership and chaperoning.

Worship and Music Along with pastors, work to ensure what is needed for Sunday worship, special services and the Sacraments is in place. Explore new ideas for worship as appropriate.
Assist the Minister of Music in nurturing musical gifts from God and provide outlets for spiritual growth and engagement with the church.
A.Ensure bibles, hymnals and candles are in place (Sanctuary Guild)
B.Schedule and train servers and prep communion (Sacraments subcommittee)
C.Review possible adjustments to the order of worship and/or the times and locations of worship
D.Determine needs/interests of choirs and congregation
E.Make recommendations for maintenance and/or purchasing of bells, pianos, organs, hymnals and sheet music
F.Assist with special programs
Member and Pastoral Care Provides opportunities to strengthen relationships within our church family through fellowship and caring for current and anticipated needs of our members. Finds ways to welcome and nurture new members. Make all who come here feel welcomed. Annually review membership and make recommendations.

Mission and Outreach Lead church members and others in: “service to all people”; “Joyful participation in Christ’s ongoing life and work”; “working for the transformation of society by seeking justice”; and the “proper use of the gifts of God’s creation.” From the Book of Order
A.Annually recommend to session the distribution of mission funds
B.Organize and promote hands-on mission opportunities for members.
C.Communicate current needs and ways members of all ages can engage in mission.
D.Maintain mission collaborations with organizations beyond FPC, such as Caring Hearts,CWS, PCUSA, WJP, FMSC, IHOC, Haddonfield Council of Churches, Urban Promise and St.Wilfrid’s
E.Promote and deliver collections and donations approved by session including the four PCUSA special offerings.
F.Work with the Senior Pastor to oversee transitional housing spaces.
G.Maintain communication with partner agencies to determine needs and efficacy of their programs and our efforts (Kids Alley, Food Bank of South Jersey, New Visions, Your Food Shelf)
H.Provide information regarding social justice issues impacting the most vulnerable people in our community, nation and world. Encourage member engagement in actions to correct these issues.
