Avoiding Dog Bites While On Route
Dogs on delivery
routes pose a serious
concern to our service
providers. The
following slides
provide helpful tips
when confronted with
a dog while on route.

Tip #1
While approaching a delivery area,
be aware of signs that indicate a dog
is present. Those signs include:
• Water or Food Bowls
• Dog House
• Leash or Running Chain
• Dog Toys

Tip #2
Many dog bites occur
because dogs
instinctively
recognize their
owners' premises as
territorial boundaries
and are protective of
their territory.

Tip #3
When approaching a
delivery stop, make
sure dogs know of
your presence. Dogs
don’t like surprises
so use your horn or
communicate your
presence verbally.

Dogs can attack for unknown reasons.
Be sure to protect yourself by being
aware of your surroundings. The
friendliest of dogs can attack even if
you are friendly and non-threatening.

Running from a dog will
not always prevent an
injury. Running
oftentimes will increase a
dogs excitement and
provides an opportunity
for them to bite while
your back is to them.

Dogs have been known to
break through screens and
storm doors, or to escape
when a customer opens a
door to collect a package.
Use your foot to hold a
door closed when
possible.

Never try to bribe a dog
with a treat. A treat will
be accepted, but you may
not. A better method is
to talk in a friendly tone,
using the dogs name
when possible, from a
safe distance.

Never pet dogs--
although well-intended,
this continues to be a
source of dog bites.
Even if you are familiar
with the dog, avoid
petting.

Dogs can attack without
notice. The best way to
protect yourself is to
stay alert and, if
confronted, use the
withdrawl procedures
on the following slide.

What to do if a dog appears as if it
may attack:
•Remain Calm
•Stand your ground
•Use a box or your diad as a shield
•While facing the dog, back slowly
and carefully to avoid a fall.
