Avoiding Dog Bites While On Route

Dogs on delivery

routes pose a serious

concern to our service

providers. The

following slides

provide helpful tips

when confronted with

a dog while on route.

3 UPS Comprehensive Health and Safety Process

Avoiding Dog Bites While On Route

Tip #1

While approaching a delivery area,

be aware of signs that indicate a dog

is present. Those signs include:

• Water or Food Bowls

• Dog House

• Leash or Running Chain

• Dog Toys

Tip #2

Many dog bites occur

because dogs

instinctively

recognize their

owners' premises as

territorial boundaries

and are protective of

their territory.

Tip #3

When approaching a

delivery stop, make

sure dogs know of

your presence. Dogs

don’t like surprises

so use your horn or

communicate your

presence verbally.

Tip #4

Dogs can attack for unknown reasons.

Be sure to protect yourself by being

aware of your surroundings. The

friendliest of dogs can attack even if

you are friendly and non-threatening.

Tip #5

Running from a dog will

not always prevent an

injury. Running

oftentimes will increase a

dogs excitement and

provides an opportunity

for them to bite while

your back is to them.

8 UPS Comprehensive Health and Safety Process

Tip #6

Dogs have been known to

break through screens and

storm doors, or to escape

when a customer opens a

door to collect a package.

Use your foot to hold a

door closed when

possible.

Tip #7

Never try to bribe a dog

with a treat. A treat will

be accepted, but you may

not. A better method is

to talk in a friendly tone,

using the dogs name

when possible, from a

safe distance.

Tip #8

Never pet dogs--

although well-intended,

this continues to be a

source of dog bites.

Even if you are familiar

with the dog, avoid

petting.

11 UPS Comprehensive Health and Safety Process

Tip #9

Dogs can attack without

notice. The best way to

protect yourself is to

stay alert and, if

confronted, use the

withdrawl procedures

on the following slide.

12 UPS Comprehensive Health and Safety Process

What to do if a dog appears as if it

may attack:

•Remain Calm

•Stand your ground

•Use a box or your diad as a shield

•While facing the dog, back slowly

and carefully to avoid a fall.
