RESEARCH WORK

Investigating how poverty hinders effective provision of Environmental Education and Awareness Activities: A Case Study of Chipulukusu Compound, Ndola. Poverty reduction has been unanimously endorsed by the international community as the overarching goal of development. However, the relationship between poverty and education operates in two directions, poor people are more often unable to obtain access to adequate education and without an adequate education people are often constrained to a life of poverty. Many societies particularly in developing countries are vulnerable to the general character of poverty factors such as Ignorance, poor education skills, apathy, poor health, wage differentials, overpopulation, unemployment and subsistence agriculture which forces people to degrade the societies natural resources. Therefore this research mainly investigated how poverty factors such as unemployment level, Ignorance, disease, over population, apathy, dependency and dishonesty hinder environmental education and can be used as a blueprint of approach concerning dealing with marginalized communities. The theoretical and conceptual frame work behind this research was structural functionalism which in sociology and other social sciences can be defined as a school of thought according to which institutions, relationships, roles and norms that together constitute a society serves a purpose, and each is indispensable for the continued existence of the others and of society as a whole.
