ACTIVITIES
As a part of me finishing my degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, I interned/volunteered at the American Red Cross. I was with the Disaster Relief department for the Red Cross, and what they do is focus on meeting people's urgent disaster-caused needs. When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, health and mental health services, and bulk distribution of needed items to meet the basic human needs of those affected.
My assigned task was to do intake work. When there is a home fire reported to the American Red Cross, I take down the client’s information (name, phone number, address, etc.) which is called the intake process. During this process we also want to know how many people were injured as well as who all was living in the home. The information must be confirmed and accurate because this depends on how much funding the American Red Cross will give the clients. At the end of the intake process the client will be asked what the best method is to receive the funds (American Red Cross debit card or Walmart direct to cash).
