Duties and responsibilities:
Lead physical therapist working primarily in the Ross Heart Hospital 2015-2019 on the post-surgical unit. Caseload consisted primarily of peripheral vascular and open-heart surgical recovery patients, typically receiving limb salvage, valve replacement, coronary artery bypass, or electrophysiological device placement. Additional caseload diagnoses included CHF, COPD, and the heart and lung transplant populations.
Rotation to other units as required for staff shortages on all units of the Level One Trauma Hospital including but not limited to: Burns, Oncology, Orthopedics, Trauma, Neuro (Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury), Intensive Care, Emergency Department, General Medicine, Organ Transplant (liver, kidney, pancreas), Post-partum, Geriatric, Same Day Surgery, and Inpatient Psychiatric units.
Typically treat 8 to 10 patients per day within a full 8-hour patient treatment day with evaluations typically of the treatment list. Treatment lists consist of 15 to 30 total patients requiring triage and coordination with other disciplines to determine priority based on evaluation status, discharge planning needs, frequency, and treatment needs.
Patient care duties consist of initial assessment, identification, and care plan development, and billing of all medical conditions on the hospital caseload. Diagnoses and subsequent treatment plans address but are not limited to admissions to Trauma, Neurology including vestibular rehabilitation, Orthopedics, Integumentary and Burn, General Medicine, Cardiovascular, Intensive Care, and Oncology.
Treatments generally take place either in patient rooms and adjoining hallway spaces or less frequently 2 unit Rehab Gym areas as available. Gym areas typically have a Nu-Step and resistance band options with the Brain and Spine Hospital equipped with parallel bars and an adjustable mat table.
Interventions consist of strength conditioning, balance training including vestibular rehabilitation accommodation and manual treatment technique, modalities (Warm/cold packs and TENS), gait training, transfer skills, and wheelchair mobility as appropriate.
Department goals of 95% evaluation completion within 24 hours consistently met or exceeded as reported on yearly performance reviews and meeting or exceeding patient touch and productivity standards of 18 UOS per 8 hour shift.
Team Lead responsibilities comprise 25% to 50% of the designated clinic time consisting of assisting with interviews, reconciliation reporting, staff meeting preparation, staff education, interdepartmental training with nursing and nursing assistants, attending and participating in medical center council meetings, and department quality assurance training. Recent projects consist of charge reconciliation, quality documentation spot audits, assistance in staff training and education with the establishment of a new Rehab Module documentation upgrade with the Epic Electronic Documentation system.
