First two years: I was a 9-1-1 call taker and police and fire dispatcher. I handled incoming non-emergency and emergency phone calls, asking questions of the caller to obtain the necessary information to provide to the responding police officers, fire apparatus or EMS personnel. Final 17 years: I was a uniformed police officer. I responded to calls for service, conducted criminal investigations, interviewed victims and witnesses, wrote reports, if possible I developed probable cause and arrested suspects. I responded to traffic accidents, assisted the injured, interviewed drivers and witnesses, took scene measurements and drew accident diagrams. I worked traffic enforcement and issued violators warnings or citations.
In addition to my duties as a patrol officer, I was an advisor for the Salem Police Cadet unit, a coed law enforcement explorer post for youth, ages 14-21. I conducted training classes for the cadets in many of the aspects of law enforcement. I also supervised various activities where they provided security and worked crowd control for community fairs and events. I also taught first aid, CPR and emergency vehicle operation course to the sworn members of the police department.
I was injured on the job in 2000 and became permanently disabled as a result of that injury, which caused me to have to retire.

I answered phones for over 300 companies, handling the calls or taking messages, as requested by each of the companies. I also answered mobile radio calls and placed outgoing phone calls for them at their request, connecting the two by switchboard.
