Hi! I’m Zach.
I enjoy building beautiful, highly technical user interfaces.
What the user can touch and feel is my domain; I’m a Swiss Army Knife for anything living within a web context. I’m experienced with data-driven web applications, marketing interfaces with ambitious animation patterns, highly performant data visualizations, WebGL and more; if there’s a way to get pixels on the screen, I’ve obsessively pursued how to do so in the most elegant, performant way possible.
HTML5 • CSS3 (Sass) • JavaScript (ES5-2021)
Vue (highly preferred) / React / Svelte / Angular / etc.
<canvas> api (2D & some WebGL) • GLSL • Three.js
build Tools: Gulp • Grunt • Webpack • Vite
node • express • mongodb • git • ionic • cordova • electron performance optimization • responsive development & design • cross-browser compatibility • progressive enhancement • ui/ux design • interaction design Portfolio

Asteroid (Contract)
September 2020 – January 2021
My time was split between two senior
consultant roles building robust single
page applications using React and Vue.
These roles are fully-remote, so
effective communication and consistent
presence have been key in our success as
a team.
UI Engineer @
pHin (ConnectedYard,
Inc)
September 2018 - August 2020
I joined this incredibly capable team in
2018 as a specialist for anything living
in a web context: both internal and
user-facing features, on the web and a
handful of views within our mobile app.
I worked on internal tooling, data
visualizations, marketing interfaces
with complex analytics tracking, and
much more. Vue was our shop framework of
choice; I've written several non-trivial
Vue applications from scratch in
addition to developing and maintaining
existing legacy applications written in
AngularJS. Our goalposts at pHin were
rapidly moving as the product evolved,
so it was mission critical to write
clean, maintainable code.
UI Engineer (Contract) @
LG&E and KY Energy LLC
Oct 2016 - February 2017
I joined a small scrum team to help
tackle a complete revamp of how LG&E
techs track their work requests and
handle data in the field. Leveraging
Angular2 & Ionic we set out to build an
iOS application to streamline their
workflow, offering an intuitive
experience for people of all levels of
technical expertise. We used @ngrx/store
to implement Flux’s unidirectional data
flow model. We used complex Git
workflows to handle our rapid feature
development and regularly met with
stakeholders to help bridge the gap
between requested features and technical
hurdles.
Front End Developer @
OOhology
May 2016 - August 2016
Joining the OOhology team for a second
time, I once again crafted cross-browser
robust responsive user interfaces
a l o n g s i d e t h e o n e o f t h e b e s t
development teams in Louisville. We
utilized Node.js + Gulp.js as the basis
of our workflow, from Sass compilation
to the transpiling and concatonation of
ES6 modules. For templating I leveraged
both Jade and Blade to better integrate
with our Laravel-based in-house CMS. It
was here that I started familiarizing
myself with React, taking a strong
liking to JSX and the unidirectional
data flow of Flux.
Associate UI Engineer @
August 2014 - September 2015
Chasing my dreams of working in Silicon
Valley I joined some of the Bay’s
brightest at LinkedIn in creating
economic opportunity for the global
workforce. I worked on the Brand &
Marketing team (BAM!); in addition to
component development for Adobe
Experience Manager, an enterprise Java-
based CMS, I played a major role in the
total refresh of business.linkedin.com.
I built on my knowledge of Git in
addition to some other technologies such
as the Grunt task runner and Handlebars
templating. We used Review Board for
peer reviews and JIRA for ticket
t r a c k i n g a n d t i m e l o g g i n g . I
continuously built on my knowledge of
Javascript design patterns and project
organization.
Front End Developer @
OOhology
November 2013 - August 2014
The majority of my workload involved the
development of robust fully-responsive
user interfaces with extensive browser
support; from Internet Explorer 8 to
Android 2.3, from Safari on iOS 6 to
Internet Explorer Mobile 10. Our solid
leadership and rigorous peer review
demanded quality and resulted in the
rapid growth of my skills. Sass was our
CSS preprocessor of choice; I created
mixing abstractions (layout, typography,
responsive scaling and more) whenever I
found myself presented with a problem
for which I’d already developed a
solution, inevitably leading to a
sizable collection of reusable modules
for rapid prototyping. It was here that
I became proficient with Git.
Front End Developer &
Designer @ Mediaura
March 2012 - September 2013
I cut up designs into semantic HTML, CSS
and JavaScript in addition to general
maintenance on existing projects. I also
handled overflow design work if our
creative director had too much on his
plate. Being the only FED at Mediaura it
fell on my shoulders to make sure our
development was at a competitive level.
It was here that I started diving into
the world of CSS preprocessors in
addition to best JavaScript practices,
in terms of both performance and
structure. I also established responsive
development as an agency standard.
Joomla was the company CMS of choice,
though occasionally I developed with
WordPress as well. All of our projects
supported IE7.
UI/UX Designer + Front
End Developer @ Contract
July 2011 - March 2012
Working remotely for the AngelPad
startup LocBox, I designed, developed
and maintained the front end of a Ruby
on Rails application (web & mobile)
aimed at creating and retaining revenue
for small businesses. I also handled the
corporate website, stationary design, or
any sort of promotional material - print
or digital.
Front End Developer &
D e s i g n e r @ D B S >
Interactive
July 2010 - July 2011
I cut up user interface designs into
semantic XHTML, CSS, and basic jQuery. I
also handled CMS integration; with
WordPress being the shop CMS of choice,
this is where I first got my feet wet
with PHP. Websites were the majority of
my workload, though I occasionally built
the front end for mobile apps and web
applications as well. Bazaar was our
solution of choice for versioning. Most
projects required IE7 support. In
February 2011 I took on design
responsibilities in addition to
development.
