CLINICAL EXPERIENCE:
I have been employed at the Battle Creek VA hospital, Battle Creek Michigan, beginning on November 8, 2021, until May 2022. I worked as the only hospitalist physician (Primary Care) or a locked door in-patient psychiatric care building. I supervised four PA’s who provided direct, primary care for the residents in that facility along with myself. I was the medical officer providing for the day-to-day care of the geriatric and hospice patients who also had significant histories of dementia and neurocognitive disorders such as Parkinson’s syndrome. Many of the residents in building #39 have severe chronic depression with active thoughts of suicide and PTSD.
I was previously employed as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at the CHS Hospital, Balad AFB, Iraq. I was on site as the CMO and Emergency Department Director from May 2020 until April 2021. I worked daily on this site. I oversaw all the clinical staff as the CMO. I directed all our inpatient and outpatient care, and I was responsible for the leadership and management of our hospitals COVID-19 triage, testing, care, quarantine, and referral program. I also worked as an emergency physician and make daily decisions concerning injuries and medical conditions which required patients being evacuated from this site for full medical/ surgical evaluations. I participated and directed our patient care quality management system, and I was the physician in charge of our laboratory system and completed a comprehensive evaluation of our lab using the current JACHO inspection system.
My experience in working as a full time Emergency Physician began in August of 1992 and I have continued working as an Emergency Physician for over 30 years. I am currently employed as a staff physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine in the Salem VA Hospital, Salem Virginia where I have worked since 2020. I have worked in over twenty different emergency departments, including rural emergency departments such as three rivers emergency department, 3-Rivers, MI to large inner-city emergency departments such as Detroit Receiving hospital.
My experience in military medicine spans 33 years and 2 months as a physician, including a combat infantry medic tour in Vietnam, during 1969 to 1970. I have delivered primary care directed at helping active duty, reserve, guard and retired military members with the ability to navigate and determine their own medical care needs for over 33 years. I have also been deployed as an emergency medicine physician in over eight (-8-) out of country assignments.
I was the medical group commander of the 305th ARRS (Air Recovery and Rescue Squadron) Pararescue (PJ) unit. I was responsible for the training, education, and medical equipment management of my PJ unit for approximately four (-4-) years.
This time period helped me to further develop my leadership abilities in helping individuals to become special operations pararescue men who could not fail in their ability to succeed. I participated in Injury Evaluations which had direct impact on each enlisted members ability to continue to work in their job selection.
My experience in providing primary care, emergency care, EMS care, critical care management, preventive medicine, mental health care, crisis intervention and suicide assessments spans 40 years of practice and advanced educational training.
My mental health experience includes both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Psychiatric Nursing from Yale University.
My primary care experience spans over 30 years of being a Flight Surgeon emergency physician, preventive medicine and mental health provider in seven
(-7-) military deployments.
My critical care inpatient experience includes a three (-3-) year residency in anesthesiology at the University of Michigan (graduated in 1990) and six (-6-) years of working as one of the faculty in the Emergency Department at Detroit Receiving Medical Center, Detroit Michigan.
