20 YRS LITTLE LEAGUE COACH
Experience
February 1988 - August 1998 / February 2003 - October 2013
(Kaimuki Little League) now known as Honolulu Little League - Assistant
/ Head Coach
● T - Ball : Thought basic fundamentals of body warming, stretching, throwing, catching and hitting.
● Coach Pitch : Continued with basics and evaluated player skills to position them on the field that would provide safety and accomplishment in the position.
● Minors : Continued with the basics of baseball but now did evaluation of player skills to place them in a position on the field that would provide development and confidence in the position. Also gave instructions on how to play the position on the field. Players were rotated into different positions to evaluate where they excelled the best.
● Majors - Juniors : At this level, the players are stronger and becoming more confident at what they think that they can do on the field, so evaluated each individual in different positions on the field to see how they handle different situations in the position, keeping player safety in mind. Once we determined what position on the field each player could handle, I concentrated on pitchers and catchers because these positions were the hardest to teach. With the pitchers I had to teach the basics of pitching, grip, balance, stride, opening shoulders and release. Also how to field the ball if it was bunted or batted to them in different situations. With the Juniors
I had to teach how to pick off a runner on base, right handed and left handed individuals that was pitching.
With the catchers I had to teach fundamentals of catching different pitches, how to move behind the plate to block the dirt balls, how to remove the helmet for pop ups, how to field bunts, and where to throw the ball in different situations and how to throw to 2nd or 3rd if the runner tries to steal. Also how to block the plate on plays that came home.
At this level developing individuals as position players is the key, the more athletic individuals can play in multiple positions on the field so evaluation of the individuals in different positions of the field has to do with safety in mind, can they handle the position. After determining their positions then working on developing the skills for whatever positions that they would excel and become an all around team player.
