Performed work as a Private Duty Caregiver and Certified Home Health Aide at the homes of a number of private clients, and in hospitals and clinics for injured, ailing or end-of-life patients. Within the span of three years, I have assisted scores of patients who present with a number of catastrophic injuries, post-operative conditions, and debilitating illnesses. The work involved a numerous variety of medical cases including Alzheimer’s; Parkinson’s Disease; Dementia and other cognitive impairments, mental health issues such as Clinical Depression, chemical dependence and withdrawal; HIV/AIDS; neuropathy and fibromyalgia; Cancer; Stroke; differing degrees of paralysis and mobility; Muscular Dystrophy and Chronic Rheumatoid Arthritis; Post-operative and otherwise inflicted injuries. These cases required varying degrees of specialized and basic nursing skills such as: patient transfer using specific techniques and equipment such as Hoyer and other lifts, Gait Belts, and wheelchairs; meal preparation in light of specific dietary indications/restrictions and feeding; personal hygiene, bathing (including sponge baths), showering and dressing; grooming to include shaving, tooth brushing, and haircare. Duties include sanitizing living areas, kitchen and restrooms; changing and sanitizing Foley catheters, stints, and wounds; and basic physical therapy and exercise outlined in the Plan of Care. Communication with the patient is key in establishing long-term satisfying and mutually beneficial relationships with a focus on the sustained and improved mental, emotional, psychological and physical wellbeing of the patient (and caregiver). Understanding and compassionate consideration of the patient’s true interests and abilities are integral in designing a calendar that includes medical and standard appointments, but that also establishes a routine integrating social and diversion activities and plans both inside the home, and as outings. I bring a cheerful and productive atmosphere to the patient that helps with establishing a warm, caring, and light perspective inspiring the patient to be healthy and happy.
