WORK HISTORY

San Antonio Military Medical Center, General Surgery Clinic -JAN2019-AUG 2019 Served as Interim Chief Nursing Officer for the Department of Surgery while still employed in present role as Chief Nurse in the General Surgery Clinic. Being dual-hatted, I effectively managed and performed both duties until a new Department CNO was hired.

San Antonio Military Medical Center, General Surgery Clinic –SEPT 2014-present

As a GS-12, Chief Nurse of the General Surgery Clinic, my duties include managing sub-clinics under General Surgery, which include Breast Cancer Clinic, Wound/Ostomy, Pediatrics, Bariatrics, Colorectal and Surgical Oncology. Managing the day to day operations of a these busy clinics, providing guidance to and oversight of approximately 40 staff members, to include military personnel, contractors and Government employees. Other duties involve arranging staff education classes, managing patient consults and appointments, to include cancelling, scheduling or rescheduling appointments, educating patients/family on preoperative and postoperative procedures and expectations, monitoring employee timekeeping/time cards in ATAAPS, reviewing/approving annual leave/sick leave requests, implementing and/or improving policies, procedures and process improvement strategies that result in better patient satisfaction scores, resolving patient care and/or patient satisfaction issues, chart audits conducted monthly for quality control, assisting providers with credentialing process, handling/resolving ICE complaints, and other daily issues that arise. To improve patient satisfaction, I implemented a performance improvement project to decrease patient wait-times, as well as a project to improve the Pre-Admissions process.

Performs vice hiring actions in attaining/recruiting new employees, conducting monthly chart audits for compliance with policies/procedures; Ensuring staff maintain their BLS and certifications, competencies, and identifies any new educational needs based on changing equipment, technologies or processes implemented. Applies evidenced-based practice principles to validate and/or improve nursing practice. Completes annual performance appraisals and proficiencies in a timely manner and effectively maintains all files, assuring competency and safe practice for assigned staff. Performs human resource (HR) functions including performance-based interviewing for selection of staff, in a fair, unbiased manner to create a diverse environment and workforce.

Submits all necessary documentation and data to the Department of Surgery, HR, committees and PI coordinator, prior to the deadline. Implements action plans to assure performance measures are met to improve organizational performance. Assures a safe patient environment and immediately corrects deficiencies.

Maintains working knowledge of the AFGE contract, and abides by the contract, laws and regulations. Very proficient in clinical programs such as AHLTA, ESSENTRIS, CHCS, DHMRSI, HAIMS and S3.

oOther duties include: Analyzing data and coordinating with the network interdisciplinary team to develop a plan for the appropriate level of care that addresses the patients consult needs.

San Antonio Military Medical Center, San Antonio, TX 09/11- 09/14

Staff Nurse (contractor) in a 34 bed Post Anesthesia Care unit; caring for soldiers, military veterans, family members and children postoperatively, preoperatively and in same day surgery. Work areas include pre-op, PACU and same day (ambulatory) care. Duties include caring for patients, monitoring vitals, monitoring airway, breathing, circulation and pain. Resolving issues related to pharmacy issues, patient and/or family member issues, performing charge nurse activities and responsibilities, maintaining patient safety, maintaining compliance with hospital and JCAHO standards. Precepting/Orienting new nurses/employees, Teaching/Educating patients regarding medications and post-op activities, giving the best care to patients and being actively involved in motivating staff to perform at their optimal levels. North Central Baptist Hospital, San Antonio, TX 07/08-9/11

Staff Nurse in a 20 bed Post Anesthesia Care Unit; caring for the adult and pediatric population directly after surgical procedures; maintaining airway, breathing, circulation and pain control. Making call backs to clients to check on their progress, rounding on patients that have been transferred to nursing units and offering a helping hand or clinical info where needed. Charge nurse duties included rounding on inpatients, resolving issues/conflicts with patients, nurses and doctors, overseeing the activities of the PACU for smooth transition and patient flow. North Central Baptist Hospital, San Antonio, Texas 05/06 – 7/08

Charge/Staff Nurse – Team leader with up to 15 staff members that include RNs, LVNs, and

CNA’s in a 30-bed Surgical/Oncology/Medical Surgical Unit. Assisted Nurse Manager in patient flow and staff assignments, assisted in strategies to cut supply costs and was effective in resolving doctor, patient and family concerns/issues as well as reviewing charts to extract data for quality improvement measures. Baptist Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas 05/02 – 5/06

Charge/Staff Nurse – An effective and prudent Charge nurse and Team leader with up to

12 staff members that included RNs, LVNs, and CNAs on a 24 beds Cardiovascular Critical

Care Unit. I provided care to multiple, complex and high acuity patients. Skills included maintaining cardiac medication drips; hemodynamic monitoring; removing arterial sheaths post cardiac cath procedures; conscious sedation for cardioversions; monitored patient flow and staff assignments as well as resolved patient and family concerns/issues; reviewed charts to extract data for quality/performance improvement measures and collected data for positive patient outcomes and satisfaction surveys.
