Director of Facilities 1/19-present

The Hospitals of Providence, Sierra Campus and Specialty Hospital Campus

El Paso, Texas

Provide contracted facility management services (through Vanguard Resources) which includes Safety, Security, and Engineering departments for two hospitals, three medical office building, one long term care center, and various off site office locations. Report to the COO at the Tenet facility.

Selected to fill a position in a facility that due to age (45 years) and condition, required a seasoned and experienced leader. Surveyed campus, developed $1,500,000 project list to remediate deteriorating conditions. Developing Standard Operating Procedures and made changes in staffing level and personnel.

Passed Joint Commission with no documentation finding, no THUMPR finding, no electrical panel finding. A great survey.

Revised PM procedures to ensure reliability and regulatory requirements were met.

Constructed numerous COVID-19 related building structural modifications in an expedited manner.

(Hospital of Providence continued)

Opened a new hospital, THOP Specialty Campus, in a leased facility. Refurbished existing and installed new building systems where required, scope exceeded $2,000,000.

Installed new CMMS and PM systems, negotiated and obtained approval for full maintenance contracts for mechanical systems, and directed the remodeling process of this facility prior to opening. Closed down this facility when the COVID pandemic hit, and have reopened it again as of July 2020.

Wadley Regional Medical Center

Texarkana, TX and Hope, AR

Expertly evaluated and corrected ligature risks for inpatient units and emergency room settings at both medical centers. Efforts received praise from inspectors and surveyors.

Successfully completed a DNV annual survey along with a follow up CMS Validation Survey with NO findings in the Environment of Care/Life Safety standards.

Transitioned from contracted service to an inhouse maintenance operation while implementing and installing a new computerized maintenance management software system

Managed a reduction in force within the department which affected both hospitals.

Owner’s representative in managing and planning for several campus additions/construction projects valued at over $50 million. Completed a $1.4 million office building on schedule and within budget.

Instituted training programs to improve both employee satisfaction and patient satisfaction. Turnover rates decreased to less than 3%. After three months on the job, patient satisfaction scores relative to areas of responsibility increased each month for the next 10 months.

Chaired the Safety Committee, dealt with all regulatory agencies, emergency management agencies, and law enforcement agencies as the institutional representative.

Director of Facilities Services 9/10-2/13

Carle Foundation Hospital

Urbana, Illinois

Developed and implemented a shared services program due to the integration of Carle Foundation Hospital and Carle Clinic Association.

Implemented a regional facilities maintenance team, generated $150,000 cost savings in first 12 months. Maintained 80+ offsite facilities, including ambulatory surgery centers and remote clinics.

Managed a staff of project managers; projects included complete renovations of two offsite clinics, construction of a new clinic in conjunction with a Critical Access Hospital, construction of a new cardiac cath lab, various departmental relocations, and numerous other projects.

Managed the biomedical engineering department which maintained 8500 pieces of equipment.

Instrumental in revising the Environment of Care Committee’s annual report format, and successfully suggested implementing a subcommittee structure reporting to this committee. Responsible for all regulatory compliance activities for the division.

Director, Facility Services 12/08- 9/10

McKee Medical Center

Loveland, Colorado

Completely revised life safety plans for the medical center, surveyed and evaluated the entire facility while developing a Plan for Improvement containing 265 items.

Prepared department and the medical center for and participated in a very successful accreditation survey.

Member of the Banner Corporate Steering Committee tasked with migrating all Banner Health facilities to a new corporate database for their computerized maintenance management system. McKee was the first facility in the corporation to make the transition to the new system.

Organized a Western Region Facility Advisory Council for the 10 regional hospitals facility directors.

Implemented a contractor handbook to standardize requirements and expectations for construction activities.

Managed all in house renovations related to the introduction of Banner’s computerized physician order entry system. McKee was the first Banner facility to move to an electronic medical record.

University of Nevada Las Vegas

Selected to fill a newly created position—with the objective of developing a professional facilities management function within the student affairs division.

Managed, operated, and maintained 900,000 square feet of occupied space; 16 buildings which include a new student union, a new student recreation and wellness center, and 7 dormitories.

Instituted training programs for custodians, maintenance technicians; process mapping for professional staff in customer service roles; refined project management and planning procedures for others; and worked diligently to develop standard operating policies and procedures for all.

Led the team completing the new student recreation and wellness center (opened October 2007).

Acted as owner’s representative in the construction of a new student services center annex.

Required stricter accountability and a sense of urgency in effecting needed repairs by the maintenance department, resulting in a 98% completion rate in 24 hours or less for 5,200+ work orders in the past 9 months.

Developed a process for conducting energy audits of facilities and to produce energy reduction and conservation plans.

Dallas Regional Medical Center, Mesquite, TX

Revised all management plans and policies for the 7 divisions of this department and prepared a departmental assessment for presentation to the Board of Directors within first 45 days.

Resurrected patient/customer satisfaction scores from the basement to the upper 90% level for facility related criteria.

Dramatically improved the appearance of the facilities, instituted remedial and advanced training programs, reduced annual turnover rate from 40% to less than 10%.

Construction Project Manager, New University Hospital 1999-2004

University of Alabama, Birmingham, AL

Selected as a member of the Project Management Team for the largest capital construction project undertaken by the State of Alabama, a new University Hospital.

Served as the Owner’s Representative, managed the activities of the construction manager, and personally supervised the installation of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems for a project exceeding 900,000 square feet and $300 million in scope.

Implemented plans for equipment replacement after city experienced an unexpected flood without extending the scheduled completion date.
