RESPONSIBILITIES
Monitoring of project budges and schedules on nuclear power generation projects
Assignment of tasks to structural engineers, supervision and interdisciplinary interfaces
Interfaces with clients, vendors and consulting firms
Monitoring of structural projects to ensure that structural deliverables comply with client’s design and licensing documents, project design criteria, unique client’s requirements, government regulations and applicable industry codes such as ACI, ANSI/ AISC, ASCE/ SEI, IBC, AISI, ASME and AWS
Verification that all design inputs including Vendor information are properly interpreted and implemented
Design overviews to ensure that analysis results are reasonable and that produced designs are economical and constructible.
Proactive communication with clients and vendors including early identification of issues that could possibly have adverse impact on the analysis, design, budgets, schedule and implementation stages of the projects
Interface with vendors and installers to ensure technically sound and cost-effective resolutions of field issues during the implementation stages of the projects
EXPERIENCE
As a Structural Lead, Mr. Klaic has been involved in various nuclear issues such as:
Fukushima response related aspects
Regulatory issues involving tornado missile strike probability, non-linear behavior of structural elements, stability analysis, thermal growth assessments, rocking/ sliding due to seismic event and impact of changes in mass on the seismic response spectra and finite element models.
Providing recommendations for the more economical designs of plant modifications
Detailed evaluation of the major structural elements for the global and local impacts of the additional loads
All aspects of structural design and construction of new buildings at the existing nuclear plant sites
Interface with the installer during conceptual, 50% and final stages of the design as well as during the implementation stages of the projects
Timely responses to Advance Work Authorizations
Evaluation of the consequences of the load drop on the safety related piping
Evaluation of heavy load paths/ buried commodities
Analysis, design and implementation support for all phases of ISFSI projects including interface with crane and cask vendors
Activities required to support Combined Operating License Applications (COLAs) for proposed new nuclear units at Levi County Station, Bell Bend Station in Pennsylvania and Nine Mile Point 3 in New York such as:
- Input for Conceptual studies for structures required for UHS Make-up and Blowdown
Systems
-Conceptual design including finite element modeling for the UHS Pump House structure and foundation
-Reconciliation of site-specific structural design parameters with AREVA FSAR (Design Certification Document DCD)
-Reports for the description of site-specific safety related utilities
-Report for site specific foundation design parameters with AREVA FSAR (DCD)
-Modifications related to the seismic evaluation of platforms and equipment/ component missile shields/ barriers on TVA Browns Ferry Plant
Independent Third-Party Reviews
Program management for design change packages issued in support of Extended Power Uprate (EPU) projects
Providing support for NRC Independent Design Verification Review
Seismic modifications of masonry walls
Resolutions of Condition Reports (CRs)
Evaluation of structural aspects of the station’s design and licensing basis documents including Updated Final Safety Analysis Report, Safety Evaluation Reports, Deviation Reports as well as the responses to NRC bulletins and generic letters
Technical support for the construction assessment program related to weld connection discrepancies
As a Structural Engineer Mr. Klaic was involved in:
- Linear, three-dimensional space frame finite element program for the incremental nonlinear analysis, and a finite element program for the concrete expansion anchor and embedded plate analysis
- Structural analysis and design of reinforced concrete walls, beams and slabs; steel plate girders, columns and braces; steel and concrete connections; foundation; crane runways; flume and head-loss analysis; braced deep excavation cuts and tunnels.
