moving forward

2011

This was our second year of exciting new textbooks in reading/language arts and math for our kindergarten through fifth-grade students. There were also new textbooks in English language arts, math, science and social studies for our sixth through twelfth-grade students. Teachers received special training to use these tools to best educate our students. Along with the new materials, we also welcomed a new assessment tool for most of our students. AIMSweb is a system of tests that is simple to administer and score and is used frequently to ensure our students’ progress. Together the new materials and the assessments helped us to strengthen our system of tiered instruction. With tiered instruction, students with greater educational needs are given more intensive interventions in order to bring their achievement level up to their grade level.

Another area where we focused our efforts was to develop teacher- based teams. Groups of teachers meet to analyze and solve instructional problems. The Ohio Leadership Advisory Council developed the model we used for this. Teacher-based teams are a part of the Ohio Improvement Process, a program to help schools raise the level of achievement for all students in Ohio. It uses data to help make instructional and management decisions, which helps us provide the very best instruction possible.

“Since joining the Summit Academy

Management Board, I’ve grown to

appreciate the vibrant, diverse

individuals who make up this group.

We represent the entire organization,

not a specific constituency, of our

employees. We may set the tone but

the staff and students are “where the

action is.” The growth of Summit

Academy Schools carries with it a

greater complexity for managing

the company, threading the legal

frameworks and managing the

political landscape. It is rewarding

and fun to be a board member of

a company that is vibrant, growing

and moving forward.”
