PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

A highly skilled Speech-Language Therapist, with 23 years’ experience in private practice and at various educational institutions; I have successfully worked with clients from toddlers to adults who have presented with a broad range of speech and language based difficulties, including language based learning difficulties and attention deficit disorder, second language difficulties, dyslexia and dysgraphia, dysarthria and apraxia, autistic spectrum disorder and stuttering.

Following an Honours degree in Speech and Hearing Therapy, I obtained my Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and have since worked in varied environments, including pre-primary, primary and high schools, corporate consulting, and private practice. Since 1996, I have concurrently operated my own private practice, alongside Ilana Erster (Speech Therapist and Audiologist) in a shared practice, providing speech and language therapy, as well as training and professional development workshops to parents and teachers at numerous schools.

Particularly passionate about helping young children and adolescents in achieving their full learning potential, I believe in a multi-modal approach to learning, utilising play, state-of-the-art therapy techniques and research-based intervention strategies in order to help achieve individual therapy goals. Completed undergraduate thesis, entitled “Iconic images of stuttering,” investigating effectiveness of utilising drawings as viable method of reaching the thoughts, feelings and experiences of school-aged children between ages of 8 and 12 years who stutter.

Involved in providing both group and individual speech and hearing therapy to children and adults in variety of mono- and multilingual settings, including hospitals, clinics and special education schools.

Gained following clinical experience at Johannesburg General Hospital:

-Worked with adults who presented with voice pathologies, head injuries and stroke patients.

-Ran weekly cleft palate clinics.

-Accompanied physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, ear nose and throat specialists and neurologists on daily in-patient and out-patient ward rounds.

Involved as member and coordinator of Speakeasy Stuttering Association of SA, national organisation that establishes self-help support groups for people who stutter. Involved in educating public through various channels about stuttering disorder, particularly talking to teachers and institutions, and running monthly self-help groups for adults, teenagers, and parents of children who stutter.
