RUBBER MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION, Washington, D.C., President and CEO, 1997-2008. Crisis Management Leadership. Led tire industry through the Ford/Firestone tire recall crisis. Led successful industry lobbying efforts that resulted in the TREAD Act. Prevented legislation that would have crippled tire manufacturing without concomitant safety measures. Advocated key provision on tire fuel efficiency included in the Energy Bill of 2007, forestalling numerous copycat bills at state level. Coalesced response to recall of Chinese-manufactured tires in 2007. Testified before the U.S. Congress on the extent of knock-off products and safety ramifications. Led outreach to largest Chinese tire manufacturers by meeting in Beijing with leading Chinese manufacturers, thereby convincing these entities to participate in essential RMA statistical reporting programs and isolating the bad actors. Organized global tire industry players to adopt testing regulations on a world-wide basis.

AMERICAN CHAMBER OF SHIPPING, Washington, D.C., President and CEO, 1996-1997. Chief advocate and spokesperson before U.S. legislative and regulatory entities. Led industry representation on delegation of U.S. government before International Maritime Organization (IMO). AMERICAN PLASTICS COUNCIL, Washington, D.C., Group Vice President, 1991-1996. Staff recruitment, training, and development success. Coordinated massive $40+ million advertising campaign to position plastics among competing materials to prevent products bans and consumer deselection. Led staff of 60 individuals. Staff expertise hires included professionals in advertising, communications, government affairs, technical & engineering, and statistics. Ad campaign halved the mostly negative perception of plastics to a positive perception in less than two years.

COUNCIL FOR SOLID WASTE SOLUTIONS, Washington, D.C., President, 1988-1991. Hired to recruit & lead a newly created organization to prevent plastic product bans. Put together a winning strategy and budget of $10+ million; hired and trained staff in less than six months. Addressed and defeated more than 500 bills at state and local levels of government to protect plastics. Convinced plastics industry to adopt voluntary target of 25% recycling for bottles and containers, establishing industry bona fides. Worked with key allies such as Meals on Wheels to prevent product bans.

UNITED STATES BREWERS’ ASSOCIATION, Washington, D.C., President, 1983-1988. Prevented ban on $1 billion beer advertising. Organized diverse coalition of alcohol beverage producers, advertisers, broadcasters, ACLU, and First Amendment advocates in winning campaign against ban. Numerous appearances before Congress to present case against ad ban. Scores of media appearances (60 Minutes, Today Show, Good Morning America, etc.) to articulate persuasive industry position.

Vice President and Counsel, 1978-1988. Persuaded beer industry CEOs to adopt responsible drinking campaigns, initially focused on colleges and universities. Developed liaison relationships with MADD, SADD, and other citizen activist groups to cultivate a win/win approach to alcohol issues.
