Lillington, NC. November 2011 - March 2022

Owner/Placement Manager

I started this small company when a tough decision had to be made in my own family. My father and brother were both long time insulin dependent diabetics. Both had been diagnosed with diabetes in the mid-eighties and had managed as best they could, but like many diabetics of 30 years or greater, they were now both facing issues such as multiple amputations, strokes, blindness, and kidneys problems in addition to numerous infections that are prevalent in diabetics. They were both living in the same home with my mom, who was, no doubt, a champ in her own right, but the time that she could safely and effectively care for them in the home setting. It was obvious they would require placement in a long term, skilled nursing facility. That was not a decision I was ready to make. I took a leap of faith and brought my years of nursing experience home with me and did the only option we had left, and that was to bring skilled nursing into their home. That solved only a part of the equation. I would still need income that would allow me to leave nursing in the public sector. With our family doctor to supervise the medical referrals and orders, a few of the most compassionate nurses I had worked with over the years, and a small but unbelievable team of certified nurses assistants, A Little Help from Our Kin, a very small but determined, skilled nursing home health care agency was born on a slim corner desk and backed by an even slimmer bank account. We quickly found other families who needed the specialized care and vowed to provide with families who took an active role in their loved ones' care to keep them at home. Over the next 10 years we operated literally by tooth and nail with as few as six clients and at times our maximum insured at ten. No one got rich working with us but it does give me rich satisfaction in knowing all of the patients got their wishes of spending their last moments with quality care, exactly where they wanted to be, with their families. My father passed away in November of 2018. Because of the financial hardships of running a small specialized agency, we had announced to our current clients and staff earlier that we would not be taking on any future clients but held out obligation to stay in operation for our current clients as long as they needed our services. My brother passed in May of 2020. We were able to continue our obligation and cared for our last client until March 2022. EDUCATION
