Discover Letter

If you were to ask me when I was finishing my graduate program where I would be in the 2020s, I would have said that I would have been in charge of a creative department at some high-profile ad firm. Funny where life takes us.

Here I am, a little over twenty years from that graduation having more life experience I could have ever dreamed and re-booting my career. What is there to discover about a stay-at-home dad?

Good question!

I learned a lot about patience and working with others that school nor work had yet been able to touch. I discovered there is a difference between just outfits and fashion. I had to be an artist for projects I had long since thought were in my past. I was a chauffeur, a photographer, an entertainer, an event planner, a financial director, learned about construction and electronics, led educational forays, worked in the judiciary, had to become knowledgable about security and investigations, and was a tackling dummy.

All this experience cannot be summed up easily in a resumé. In September of 2004, I created a group for stay-at-home dads. This was NOT a support group as men are taught they do not need support or help. This was a social group that happened to have little kids, playdates, dress-up, field trips, discussions about diapers and other baby products as well as how to juggle a crying baby and cleaning the house, and so much more. This group is still running today, albeit as more of a social outlet for the dads without the kids. In October of 2009, I became a Girl Scout along with my daughter. I led a troop, planned meetings, corralled a number of kindergarteners, taught them about the organization, organized field trips and balanced the troop account. I learned quickly that while I led the troop, I was by no means in charge. Ask the five-year olds. They were. This experience led to joining the local executive board as a Community Manager, wherein I was responsible for liaising with troop leaders and the local Council; overseeing new troop creation; and recruiting, retention, and education of new leaders. I also planned community-wide events an implemented new protocols to maximize retention, resolved leader disputes, and instituted innovative programs.

Finally, I coached a sport I did not know anything about (lacrosse), was a dance dad, and did ballet and gymnastics with my girls.

So, while I was not exactly working for pay, I had a job that provided constant daily benefits. Now, the kids are self-reliant and are moving on. Time for this award-winning copywriter to hang up his at-home dad hat and re-enter the workforce. I look forward to bringing my unique resumé of skills to you and for the benefit of your company. I do not see my the twenty past years as a gap in my work history and more as a chance to get a different world view. Allow me to look at your needs from outside the box. You will not be disappointed.
