Projects’ themes include community service, gliders, catapults, sustainable building and renewable energy. All projects are hands-on, filled with real-world mathematics, community involvement and a start-to-completion process. Resources come from within the community and involve airplane pilots, charitable organizations, sustainable building architects, former industrial arts teachers and renewable energy experts.
●Middle School Numeracy Specialist (2010 - 2011): Proposed and created a specialized position and program that examined the numeracy abilities of middle school students entering grade 7 and leaving at the end of grade 8. The program included a personally developed diagnostic test and also changed the school’s time commitment to students requiring special accommodations. Persuaded administration to hire qualified math specialists to help students with math weaknesses.
●The Jack Layton Award for Youth in Sustainability – Achieved honorable mention for a personally developed student sustainable building and renewable energy project (May 2012). Published in Our Canada magazine’s December/January 2012/2013 edition.
●Recognized by LCC for designing math projects that allow and require students to be creative and imaginative. Projects do not include step-by-step lists of procedures to follow but instead give students materials and a task to complete. How they complete that task is up to them, the teacher's “apron strings” are cut.
