Duties: I have been trained to process purchase requests for supplies, tools, materials, services, and equipment to supporting operation and maintenance of all production and test equipment supporting the maintenance mission in the Nichols Industrial Complex.

Performs market research to determine availability, quality and cost reasonableness of tools and safety equipment required for maintenance and repair of production and test equipment.

Items include air purifying respirators (half and full face), supplied air respirators (SAR), (for painting, welding, sandblasting, etc.), emergency breathing apparatus (EBA) (emergency egress from a hazardous atmosphere), self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) (for firemen HAZMAT teams, emergency rescue teams, workers in the Toxic Ammunition Area), any worker who works in an "Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH) environments", powered air purifying respirators, loose-fitting respirators (for welding, sandblasting, etc.), air purification and regulator panels, vortex air conditioner, mortem air heaters, etc., protective clothing and equipment (rain suits, sandblasting suits, driving helmets, hard hats, welding helmets, etc.).

Disassembles, inspects, troubleshoots, tests, removes, installs, patches, cleans components and assemblies, checking each part for damage or deterioration, on all respiratory protective and safety equipment.

Inspects each part for defects, cuts, holes, abrasions, scratches, cracks, leaks, pits, blisters, creases, and corrosion damage. Repairs damaged metal parts by straightening dents and filing rough edges, using hammers, chisels, and files, etc., on safety equipment. Removes and installs new parts, such as inhalation and exhalation valves, diaphragm, "0" rings, face piece, head harness, bearings, nipples, pistons, retaining rings, gaskets, lens, spectacle kits, pressure gauges, bezels, back-up rings, bonnets, by-pass seats and stems, injectors, springs, primary and secondary levers, locking clips, filters, battery packs, seals, cylinders, hoses, adapters, quick disconnect, cylinder valves, filter housing, breathing tubes, regulators, audible alarms, etc.

Assures that replacement parts are from same factory and are identical to the ones being replaced. Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) are flow tested each year, and total overhaul every three years or sooner as required.

Makes operational test, subjective breathing test, and flow test of all repaired or overhauled respirators, using Breathing Apparatus Test Bench Console.

Maintains, troubleshoots, tests, repairs, and calibrates electric and air operated test equipment such as Breathing Apparatus Test Bench Console, TSI plus quantitative face fit tester, High Pressure (5000 PSI) respiratory air system, equipped with valves, gauges, regulators, electric motors, vacuum pumps, electric timers, micro switches, relays, resistors, tubing, and fittings.

Using OSHA qualitative and quantitative face fit test protocols, tests users for proper fitting respirators needed for various jobs.

Maintains many styles and sizes of respirators for fit test purposes. Assures that user does not have facial hair (beard, mustache, etc.) that would interfere with proper fit of respirator to face. Performs different qualitative fit test protocols, (irritant smoke, stannic oxychloride, banana oil, isogamy l acetate, and saccharin solution aerosol).

Determines if any fumes are leaking into face piece, by odor threshold screening test. Ensures user avoids olfactory fatigue.

Performs quantitative face fit test protocols using several respirators fit test machines. Performs qualitative test of face piece on user in test booth.

Performs functional check of control panel to assure machine is operating properly. Makes functional adjustments in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

Draws samples from the face piece during a series of predetermined exercises (normal breathing, deep breathing, moving head side to side up and down, talking, and again normal breathing).

Performs tests with machine, recording strip chart of each exercise.

Receives used safety and respirator equipment for cleaning, sanitizing and sterilizing.

Operates commercial type, ultrasonic sterilizing, and washing machines and drying devices for cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and drying of safety and respiratory equipment.

After cleaning and drying of respirators, seal items in plastic bags for storage and reissue. Performs maintenance on ultrasonic washer by emptying disinfectant from reservoir and replacing with fresh disinfectant.

Performs preventive maintenance to machines such as cleaning chassis weekly, checking disinfectant level to assure accurate level is maintained, checking filters and screens in drain valves, cleaning reservoir and floats, etc.
