OBJECTIVE
To express the skills I have acquired in the Computer-Aided Design field along with expressing my ongoing desire to expand my experience as an Engineering Designer.
SUMMARY
Initially I acquired my design training & experience while in the Air Force’s Engineering Assistant Specialists program & career field. Now through years of various design work experience & also from attending functions, sometimes self-financed because of my desire to stay current with new versions of design software that are out that would help me do my job faster & more efficiently, such as Autocad Seminars put on by Autodesk developers & Engineers for various Autodesk software such as but not limited to Autodesk Advance Steel & Navisworks or the Bentley Conferences offered by the Bentley Institute Engineers & Designers who created the various design software, where extensive knowledge, tips, tricks, software updates, & new software design capabilities for software such as Microstation MapGIS, ArcGIS, Geopak, Inroads, STAAD Pro, PDMS, OpenRoads & SolidWorks are taught & shown through linking how the software could be used alongside Microsoft Office Suite Programs such as Excel & Word I have been able to expand my design capabilities. Utilizing those particular Bentley design software, Autodesk design software such as Civil 3D, & AutoCAD Land Development Desktop, & various other 3D design software I have designed various Design/Build, residential& commercial land development projects including but not limited to site layouts, site grading, parking lot design, new subdivisions / residential & commercial new Roads & /or Highways needed leading to or on the new site, lots, malls, fast food restaurants, banks, various wiring diagrams, schematics, buildings & structures, & many different roadway/highway jobs including the 3D design of transmission lines-towers & poles, any storm sewer, sanitary sewer, & water needed underground. I would have to export those models into various formats for various departments to allow them to get data they needed off of it. I have also designed a large variety of military projects some of which required secret clearance ranging from but not limited to roads & buildings while in Saudi Arabia, runways & aircraft hangers needed on a base while in Italy, levee design for the Gulf of Mexico, to golf courses in California for which I needed to design, overlay, & merge multiple surfaces to get the needed varying surface elevations from hole to hole. I have gained a lot of design experience with surveying then processing my raw ASCII data which I would then use to design my DTMs, alignments, profiles, topo, etc. I have an excellent military record& consistently strive to improve myself as well as the team. I am a highly motivated Engineering Designer who welcomes new & challenging opportunities with increased responsibilities. I have a great working relationship with TXDOT personnel & is very familiar with TXDOTs design standards, policies & procedures. I enjoy what I do & have been commended many times on my ability to learn a new software & become very efficient at it very quickly which makes me a great right hand man to a P.E.

Vickrey & Associates
San Antonio, Texas
January 2017 to January 2018 Principal Civil-Structural Designer /G.I.S. Specialist
I performed various Civil 3D Modeling / Grading Design on many various infrastructure TXDOT projects such as but not limited to Bus stops improvements design, subdivision design, residential/commercial design, Gas line creation/gas main line extension Design, waterline design, Roadway/Highway Design modeling for roads leading to, needed on the site, or from the project site while making sure I adhere to TXDOT standards. TXDOT required that I utilize Bentley software such as but not limited to Microstation, & Bentley Map GIS to combine & or create various Georeferenced aerial photo images &/or files making sure they relate to the geographic coordinates for that site while also taking care of various GIS or Autocad Civil 3D file conversions for the team. I utilized Inroads, Inroads Survey or Power Geopak V8i SS4 for my TXDOT Civil models /clients who required that we use Bentley products while also handling the creation of Microstation configuration files/workspaces, ASCII files, DTM’s, Plan/Profiles, Horiz & Vert alignments for Earthwork Calcs, Quantities etc. needed to get that particular job up & running. I was sent to CPS Energy Work Manager Training, CPS Energy Gas Lines Design Training, & CPS Energy Designer Gas QA/QC Manager Training to design jobs on CPS Energy's Geographic Information System (GIS) and Work Order Management System (WMIS). I was sent to Bentleys OpenRoads Designer Roadway, Survey data process & subsurface utilities design update training in anticipation of infrastructure Roadway/Highway projects coming soon.
Duties performed:
Coordinated with TXDOT, other utility purveyors with facilities within the project limits, & CPS Gas Engineering personnel at the onset of the project to obtain scope, design criteria, & project schedule. I’m responsible for tasks such as performing various design on TXDOT projects such as CPS Energy Civic Improvements where I was tasked with
providing gas line conflict analysis & engineering design for new gas lines or exist gas line extensions per CPS Energy
Gas distribution system standards including any utilities I located per SAWS (San Antonio Water Systems) Maps along with reflecting my proposed gas lines. I then created digital terrain models & contours in Microstation along with creating alignments / stationing then reflect my design onto plan sheets including title sheet with location map, general notes, legend, bench marks, parcel plats with metes & bounds described, easements & right-of-ways, horiz & vertical location data tables for client distribution & review. After submitting the plans & receiving their comments back I then incorporated their comments into the design plans & issued them back to CPS Energy. The plans were prepared in accordance with CPS Energy’s Gas Codes & Standards for contract drawings.
Utilizing Power Inroads V8i SS4 or Power Geopak V8i SS4, TXDOT seed files, County Appraisal District maps & subdivision plats I’m responsible for tasks such as but not limited to designing Bus Stop Improvements where I had to design 70 new concrete bus stop concrete pads & shelters along with the landing areas also needed. For locations where I could not fit in the bus stops per the required dimensions I would have to flare out / do Taper Design for Auxiliary Lanes design on roads for the new bus stop per the AASHTO (American Association of State Highway & Transportation Official book I always refer to when designing items such as this. I had to identify any applicable drainage systems, potential conflicts, limitations of available right-of-way, traffic conditions, grades, ADA compliance & utilities with potential conflicts. My sheets showed alignments / stationing I created, potential constraints & conflicts along with my proposed improvement plans.
CB&I

concrete foundations. Civil Modeling Task included but was not limited to task such as subdivision layout design,
Corridor Modeling or Roadway/Highway Design modeling needed for roads leading to, on the site, or from the site. I
utilized Bentley Microstation, Bentley Map GIS, OpenRoads, Inroads, Inroads Survey or Geopak for my Civil models / clients who required that we used Bentley products & for those clients / projects which required that Autodesk Software was used I utilized Autocad Civil 3D 2016, Autodesk Storm & Sanitary 2016, Autodesk Navisworks 2016, & Autodesk Advance Steel 2016 for various Structural Steel Modeling tasks while also handling the creation of any Microstation or Autocad configuration files, workspaces, ASCII files, dtm’s, Plan/Profiles, Horiz & Vert alignments for Earthwork Calcs, Quantities etc. needed for that job & to get that particular job up & running while also helping staff out with any questions they may have on how to use various 3D Design software.
Duties performed:
I’m responsible for tasks such as but not limited to Designing & Modeling various 3D Models for project sites such as but not limited to the Elba LNG Project which is in Georgia, the Mozambique Africa LNG site, & Total's Port Arthur Petrochemical Site. I would then have to convert my Models for various departments such as the Piping department so they could then extract the data they needed from it. Some models such as for the Port Arthur Petrochemical Site required that I create multiple culverts, piles, foundations, beams, columns, etc 3D Structural Models after I was done creating the Civil multiple models & then merge, overlap, or overlay said models depending on the task at hand needed
I always stop whenever I see red flags for example while designing the Elba LNG project & it was time to model in any applicable underground utilities along with the very important Gas Pipelines when red flags flew out to me after not being able to reproduce/verify the gas lines locations from the old teams data I was given. My model kept showing the gas line locations to actually be 50’ feet further North from where they were currently being shown even after Modeling them in four different times so, I brought it to my Project Leads attention showed him how the gas lines shown on the drawings were not in the correct location from the data shown on the sheets so I was asked how can we fix it. So I requested a new survey, requested a certain Survey Software & explained the difference from Inroads, Civil 3D, or Geopak which will allow you to move data from Coordinate to another coordinate system but what we needed was actually this certain Survey Software and showed them why so they tried to get mgmt. to purchase it but the process was taking too long & I don’t miss deadlines so I remembered there is a Trial version which only stays active 5 min before kicking you back out therefore I was only able to process 3 to 4 points at a time but I stayed with it and got the new lines into place which confirmed the gas lines were in deed 50’ from where the old set of drawings had them shown. The project’s lead thanked me for my hard work and during an Office meeting I was told publicly thanks and the Office Engineering manager told the crowd how I was the first one to notice that gas lines were not in the right place. For this & other items I brought to their attention & fixed while designing sites such as Mozambique’s huge Africa LNG site I was given a special Bonus even though it wasn’t the end of the year yet.
Gave lunch & learn sessions on how to go from various AutoCad design software to various Microstation design software or vice versa & how to link them without any difference in line weights, line types, or symbology after some who were using Autocad & a few were using Microstation when I started but they were not uniform looking so I was asked to look at what we could do which I’ve done many times in the past so I was very familiar with that process.
BECHTEL
Houston, Texas
August 2010 to June 2014 Sr. Engineering Designer
I performed various Microstation & Autocad Design utilizing Geopak, Civil 3D, Inroads V8 &/or V8i I on tasks such as but not limited to residential/commercial various types of site design & grading, roadway/highway modeling, or Corridor modeling which included creating multiple Horiz & Vert Alignments, varying sloped Berms, Ditches, Culverts, Ponds, etc for which I then also created multiple Plan & profile sheets needed to clearly reflect what we are proposing to do in that particular area. I would then create various Structural Models to merge, overlay, or overlap onto my Civil Models.
Duties performed:
I was responsible for the Grading of the Rough & Finished Grade Models for projects such as but not limited to the Wheatstone LNG Project for example which is in Western Australia which had to have items such as ramps designed at 5% grade with 3 to 1 side slope protection, bathtubs, berms, & ditches 1 meter off the road at 2 to 1 side slopes to name a few. I worked closely with the Piping Department to produce many gridded & triangle models for them from the DTM’s I created. Initially being new to the project after finishing a prior project I was asked to take care of clients complaints about the overall look of the sheets being produced so I then able to utilize my past knowledge & experiences & gave recommendations on how our sheets could look much better& implemented those changes& was told the client (Chevron) loved it which made us go ahead& apply those same changes to all of our other future& past sheets. When I first got started on the project neither I.T., or our in house civil group designated Microstation support guy could figure out why Chevrons Configuration file was not loading correctly on our machines making all the plots not look uniform I was able to refer back to my past experience of having to set up my own configuration files while in the Air Force & many times
(continued)
Ken D. Brown Page 4
in the past allowing me to get us up & running which when finished had us all able to print or do text searchable pdf’s & have them look as if one person had done them all giving them uniformity then I told other disciplines in house what I did to get it to work in case it would help them in the future. From the multiple models, I create I also produce many
Triangle Volume Reports allowing us to see accurately how much cut & fill we have in that area. I am constantly updating our culvert schedule & having to calculate the cover needed for new culverts that I add along the way for the roads that I design. Because of my past experience one other tasks of many I have been given to do would be when we needed to find an additional 100,000 cubic meters of fill for the Construction Village from somewhere so utilizing Inroads I had to design a couple of different models showing various areas where we could gain that additional amount of fill needed. We received data in various not so user friendly formats from the Surveyors which would confuse those who had not had seen it before so they would have problems trying to process it so I was then able to step in & refer back to my past experiences of Surveying & came up with a way to get that data into Inroads so I could then generate items such as but not limited to Fiber Optic lines& other utilities, various thousands of points, structures, &/or monuments.
I had to upload my models each week for other depts. usually after converting them first so they could then be imported, overlaid, or merged into software such as but not limited to STAAD Pro or PDMS & various data could then be extracted while also creating any additional models such as Triangle or Gridded Models requested from depts such as
but not limited to Piping & I would convert any files from Autocad to Microstation or vice versa for the group.

October 2005 to October 2008 Sr. Engineering Designer
Performed AutoCad & Microstation Design utilizing Geopak for the Metro Rail Uptown & University Corridors project whereas I was the lead Metro Solutions Designer & QA/QC contact & also had to manage the budget of the tasks which I was given assuring that myself or those I generated work for didn’t go over budget.
Duties performed:
Was responsible for creating, maintaining, & implementing any Metro Solutions workspaces, configuration files,
fonts, color tables, tins, & surfaces needed to get the Metro Solutions job up & running & to Metro’s CADD Standards.
Attended all of Metro’s CADD Standards meetings since I was the point of contact for the subs as far as if their staff
needed to know how to do certain CADD tasks or to help clear up any Metro’s CADD Manuel file naming convention
questions, any symbology or attribute issues, etc. & then would pass the info along to the other subs.
To assure all files had the correct global origins, coordinate systems, & for consistency purposes I created all drawings
needed which generated a lot of work for the rest of the team.
Would hold meetings with in house team to show how exactly Metro wants everything reflected on our drawings &
to pass along what they do not want to see.
Initiated &held meetings with the 3 subs top Designer or Engineer so I could show them how Metro wants the finished
electronic CADD files & how their staff could do certain CADD tasks more efficiently to assure we met deadlines.
Was responsible for coming up with a solution to the problem the subs were having at the time which was how to
reflect their latest& greatest utilities & text without being on top of one of the other subs. After which I held a meeting
(continued)
Ken D. Brown Page 5
with all three subs representatives, we were working with to show them what I came up with so they could either start
implementing it as soon as they were back in their office or pass along to their staff.
From raw data I generated alignments, cross sections, created master files, & any master Reference files needed for
the Metro Solutions project.
Was sent to work out of another subs office downtown but this time to help them get their Metro University Corridor
project up & running & was their point of contact on any Metro CADD Standards or any CADD command issues which
I could & would usually handle over the phone but if needed I would go by their office to troubleshoot & fix the problem.
Interacted with TXDOT on certain jobs to make sure their design standards and policies were being met on our end.
Utilized Bentley Map GIS for various 2D/3D mapping edits & for geospatial information for various projects.
URS
Houston, Texas
May 2002 to October 2005 Engineering Designer
Performed AutoCad & Microstation Design utilizing Geopak, Inroads, & various land development projects utilizing Autodesk Land Development.
Duties performed:
Processed raw ASCII data from field allowing me to then produce highway/roadway P&P’s, cross sections, alignments
(stationed with offsets), geological cross sections, 3D geological maps, Site Layout plan & profiles sheets, structural
details, & complex 2D& 3D site layouts. Performed volume/earthwork calculations. Created surfaces, & sloped surfaces
utilizing Inroads through AutoCAD & or Microstation.
Troubleshooted & fixed problems such as conversion, wrong scale, or coordinates shifted during converting. Because
of my strong Surveying background, I would assist supervisor in the field with some Topographic surveying if needed.
Creation, maintenance, & or obtaining any Microstation workspaces, configuration files (i.e. user, project, interface),
fonts, color tables, surfaces, tins, dtm’s, etc. needed to get that particular job up & running.
Handling the conversion of files such as AutoCAD to Microstation or Microstation to Autocad along with any
applicable tables & or files while maintaining the files correct coordinate system.
Obtaining any licenses & or support needed to run a particular software such as Microstation & Inroads.
Performed land development of various Residential/Commercial sites which consisted of also generating existing
topo, parking lots, easements. Based off land title info handled the plotting of property corners, boundary limits,
subdivisions, lots. & also, researched& showed all applicable utilities utilizing AutoCAD’s Autodesk Land Development.
Projects whereas because of my design experience I was given the opportunity by URS to “run with” included but was not limited to the following:
Barge Lane Study (USACE Galveston District) – to make improvements to the Houston Galveston Navigation
Channels through proposed barge lanes that will serve as navigation channels specifically for barge traffic entering or departing the Port of Houston. For this project I was responsible for the Modeling of the Barge Lanes utilizing Inroads (per specs) which included: taking the Corps raw data (4 sets of xyz files containing over 100,000 combined shots for
which I had to first troubleshoot why one set of coords & my surfaces were way off & after corresponding w/ them found
out that the original surveyor had shot it in the field wrong so edited the format of shots & it was fixed) & processing it,
creating the Horizontal Alignment, creating any DTM files needed through Inroads utilizing the processed data, & cutting
all Cross Sections needed at 200’ intervals (per specs). Along with these cross sections I had to create & overlay two sets
of Design & Overbuild Templates for our varying 3:1 to 4:1 Barge Lanes widths.
St. Louis ICD Silicate Tank Farm Containment—to provide containment layouts, which offer between 50% & 110% containment of the capacity of Tank 35 (capacity = 432,000 gallons). For this project to assure accuracy I requested surveyor’s 506 point ASCII file & edited it to add additional points that were not shot in through interaction with surveyor. Then, I process the data creating any surfaces, tins, contours, volume calculations, etc. utilizing Bentley Inroads. Had to convert 475,200 gallons to cubic feet. Three of the seven containment scenarios had been examined utilizing a drawing that presents the preferred containment scheme & had the North containment wall located 1’ north of centerline of existing storm drain trench. An internal containment wall separating Building 8 from Building 7A was envisioned. I had to assume that the area within Building 8 is a part of the containment & consider the finished floor elevations of Building 8 as the lower boundary of this containment noting that there were 2 elevations within Building 8. Building 8 also contained a large shipping pump pit whose volume was provided for inclusion into the containment’s volume.
Three of the seven scenarios were:
o Scenario 1: Set top of tank farm containment wall height at plant finished floor elevation as measured at the south main door entrance at the “Scale Tank” in Buildings 8, & calculate available containment volume.
o Scenario 2: Set top of tank farm containment wall height at 1’-4” above plant finished floor elevation as .elevation of containment wall to contain 110% of Tank 35 (475,200 gallons).
