CHRIS BURROWS, Residential Faculty/EMS OPD

My name is Chris Burrows and I currently hold the position of Residential Faculty/EMS Program Director in the Fire Science/EMS Department at MCC's Downtown Center. I live with my wife, Diana, along with 13 cats. I have a lovely daughter; I also have two grandchildren.

My educational philosophy is based on the concept of student success. In order for a student to achieve, I start by asking them why they want to learn? What motivates them to be in the classroom? When the learning process gets tough (EMT material is very dense and complicated), we revisit these questions as a reminder to stay focused and driven. When a student is focused and motivated, didactic and practical skills mastery becomes more achievable. A student will tend to work harder and sacrifice more if there is something at stake, like being motivated by a new career opportunity.

Like many others, and like most of my students, public school education taught me that I had to learn specific concepts and facts, but I never learned how to apply the information. This lack of experience in critical thinking and problem solving is what cripples many EMT students early in the program, and often prevents a "borderline" student from moving forward to the certification process. I am committed to changing this trend by providing early opportunities in critical thinking and problem-solving practice. I accomplish this through student prep (enhancing our CPR program, baseline knowledge checks, and critical thinking projects), and also by adapting my lesson delivery according to student need. I give students the proverbial recipes, guidelines, and suggestions. With study and practice, they have to learn how to cook!

Along with asking students what motivates them to be here, it is only fair that I ask myself the same question. Two things have impacted my life and career choice and essentially motivated me toward a career in service and education. The first was a plane crash, which had 5 souls on board, and it crashed behind my neighbor's house. I saw two people on fire running through a field. I wanted to learn how to save lives and how to teach people how to help others. My second life-changing event was joining the Boy Scouts of America. Most of their programs involved CPR, First-Aid, Wilderness survival, etc. This organization made a huge impact in my life, and I was an Eagle Scout with several Palms by the age of 15. I learned to teach scouts so that they could understand the theory behind the topic. I learned very quickly that mastery over theory helped scouts to be better problem solvers. I was sought out to run the Environment/Wilderness center at summer camp for three years. My success in educating scouts led to my being the youngest leader for Philmont, New Mexico and the Tinnerman Canoe Base Camp in Canada. When I was 18, I became the youngest Scout Master, with special permission from the Toledo Area Council. I proudly mentored 14 Scouts who really wanted to learn and not just memorize (because it was boring). I taught them the theory and then the fun of applying the skills of scouting. They all became Eagle Scouts within two years. At a young age, I developed a drive for teaching and learning. By age 19, I became a wilderness guide and leadership educator. Companies and social groups employed me to teach wilderness programs that emphasized leadership and having fun outdoors.

I moved to Arizona in 1982 and took an EMT class. I loved the instructor because she taught the theory behind the concept, and also taught how we could affect an outcome. After becoming certified, I was quickly hired by an ambulance company and later advanced my training and education to the level of Paramedic, and obtained a job as a firefighter/paramedic. To this day, I use some of my EMT instructor's techniques and have passed them on to other instructors that are currently teaching and training our future EMS providers.

I have served this community for 30 years as EMT, paramedic and firefighter. I have taught for 40 years with great success. I am always trying to learn new ways to present the ever-changing science of pre-hospital medicine. I have obtained all of the instructor certifications for educating different EMS topics and received several awards in pre-hospital medicine. My greatest satisfaction is seeing EMTs in the field, knowing they have been trained in one of my programs, and getting feedback that they are competent providers that are positively affecting the community. The MCC Fire Science/EMS faculty team has a standard called "The Bar". Our students meet that bar, then we expect them to raise it. We know we have done our job when our students become master chefs in EMS, not just memorizing the information, but applying it to solve problems, create their own recipes, and contribute to future EMS methodologies.
