MICHIGAN NURSING LICENSING GUIDE
ELIGIBILITY FOR RN LICENSE BY EXAMINATION
Graduate from an approved registered nurse education program in the U.S. or be certified by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS).
If the applicant is a graduate of a Canadian registered nurse education program that is approved by a province in Canada, the applicant shall be exempt from completing the requirements for a certificate from the CGFNS if all of the following are met: (a) The registered nurse education program was taught in English. (b) The applicant has a current active license to practice nursing in Canada. (c) The applicant has not been sanctioned by the applicable Canadian nursing authority.
Submit the RN by Examination license online application at: www.michigan.gov/miplus.
A fingerprint report and criminal background check are required. Fingerprints must be taken using the instructions and ID numbers that are sent to the applicant after the license application and fee are received.
Pass the NCLEX-RN examination administered by Pearson Vue. ELIGIBILITY FOR RN LICENSE BY ENDORSEMENT (currently licensed in another state)
If education was obtained outside of the U.S. and Canada and have not held a license in another state for at least five years, must be certified by CGFNS.

ELIGIBILITY FOR LPN LICENSE BY EXAMINATION
Graduate from an approved practical nursing educational program, or have a professional evaluation report of your education completed by CGFNS or NACES.
Pass the TOEFL or TOEFL iBT if nursing education was not taught in English.
Submit the LPN by Examination license online application at: www.michigan.gov/miplus.
A fingerprint report and criminal background check are required. Fingerprints must be taken using the instructions and ID numbers that are sent to the applicant after the license application and fee are received.
Pass the NCLEX-PN examination administered by Pearson Vue. ELIGIBILITY FOR LPN LICENSE BY ENDORSEMENT (currently licensed in another state)
If education was obtained outside of the U.S., must have a Professional Report evaluation of your education completed by the Credentials Evaluation Service
(CES) of CGFNS, or have a full course-by-course credential evaluation of your education certified by a National Association of Credential Evaluation Service
(NACES) member organization.

ELIGIBILTY FOR LPN/RN FOR RELICENSURE
Submit the LPN or RN Relicensure license online application at: www.michigan.gov/miplus.
If your license has been lapsed for 3 years or more and you do not hold a current nursing license/registration in another U.S. Jurisdiction and must take and pass the NCLEX. In addition you will have to complete a Certification of skill competency.
A fingerprint report and criminal background check are required for all licenses lapsed 3 years or more. Fingerprints must be taken using the instructions and ID numbers that are sent to the applicant after the license application and fee are received.
ELIGIBILITY FOR NURSE ANESTHETIST SPECIALTY
Hold a current Michigan RN license.
Hold national certification by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists Council on Certification or the Council on Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.
Submit the Nurse Specialty Certification online application at: www.michigan.gov/miplus.
ELIGIBLITY FOR CLINICAL NURSE SPECIALIST
Hold a current Michigan RN license.
Hold national certification by an approved certifying organization.
Submit the Nurse Specialty Certification online application at: www.michigan.gov/miplus.
ELIGIBILITY FOR NURSE MIDWIFE SPECIALTY
Hold a current Michigan RN license.
Hold national certification by the American Midwifery Certification Board.

ELIGIBILITY FOR NURSE PRACTITIONER SPECIALTY
Hold a current Michigan RN license.
Hold national certification by an approved certifying organization.
