Project Director and Coordinator. Jovenes Saludables Seran Adultos Saludables:From Healthy Teens to Healthy Adults. Administered through Nuestra Clinica delValle until Dec 2000. Jovenes Saludables was a comprehensive health behavior intervention project targeting the issues of child and adolescent obesity and type 2 diabetes through school-based and community-based intervention. The project was funded through the American Academy of Pediatrics Community Access to Child Health Planning Funds (CATCH) program, a Pfizer Committed to Kids grant, a grant from the Children’s Heart and Health Institute of Texas, and an unrestricted educational grant from Bristol Myers Squibb.

Coordinator. Jovenes Saludables Day Camp (for Kids with or At Risk of Type 2 Diabetes). Held August 21-22, 1999. Senior Citizens’ Center, 1921 N 25thSt.,McAllen, TX 78501. JS Day Camp was a major collaborative effort between the JSSAS project and numerous agencies in the community including Dental clinics; the Diabetes Education Departments and Nutrition Departments of McAllen Medical Center, Rio Grande Regional Hospital, and Mission Hospital; representatives from the Department of Agriculture Outreach Division, American Diabetes Association local chapter, University of Pan American Department of Health and Kinesiology, the UTPA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Team. Volunteers were also provided by the UT Health Science Center San Antonio Med-Ed Program for honor high school students. It was funded in part by the JSSAS project grants as well as through donations from local sponsors such as HEB.
