Responsibilities:
• Surface preparation Pipe and components shall be abrasive blast cleaned. The degree of cleanliness shall be Sa 2 in accordance with ISO 8501-1.
• Prior to abrasive blast cleaning, the steel surface shall be dry and free from contamination (oil, grease, temporary corrosion protection, etc.) and surface defects (slivers, laminations, etc ) detrimental to the surface or to the adhesion of the coating. The blast-cleaned surface shall have a roughness between 40 µm and 90 µm, as measured in accordance with ISO 4287-1.
• After blast cleaning, the surface of the pipe shall be inspected. All slivers, laminations, weld spatter and other surface imperfections made visible by the blast cleaning process shall be removed. After removal of these defects, the residual thickness of pipe and components shall satisfy the minimum tolerance requirements specified by the relevant standard. All treated areas greater than 10 cm shall be prepared to provide a profile.
• Pipe and components shall be maintained at least3 C above the dew point temperature prior to coating. Contaminants shall be removed prior to coating. Chemical treatment of the steel may be used in addition to abrasive blast cleaning.
• Preheat temperature shall be checked using a pyrometer, surface thermometer. Mixing of primer, wet film thickness and drying time shall be verified prior to application of the sleeve.
• The HSS shall be inspected over the 100% of field joint to make sure it is free from disbandment, air entrapment, cracks, bubbles, tearing or any other defect. The overlap of the HSS on the existing coating shall be at least 50 mm on both sides.
• Adhesive shall extrude from the ends of the full installed sleeve. There shall not be any signs of disbondment, air entrapment tearing, cracks, bubbles, or any other defects. No traces of oxidation bluish areas, foreign substances, underneath. Smooth appearance with edges perfectly adherent to the pipe on the whole circumference and adhesive extruded from the ends, etc.
• The coated material shall be 100% tested using a high voltage DC impulse type holiday detector consisting of a semicircular or brush type electrode and provided with audible signal. The test voltage shall not be less than 15 kV and the progress rate shall be 300 mm/sec.
• The adhesive test for HSS consists in removing some portions of the sleeve in difference areas in order to verify the good performance of the three layer system.
• The test shall be performed using a hand dynamometer device in accordance with ASTM D1000 method B. The adhesion shall be checked by means of at least three tests on each inspected HSS.
• All holidays electrically detected shall be repaired. The affected area shall be repaired to an approved procedure and retested.
