IU Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering Bloomington, IN Doctoral Scholar Aug 2018-Present

• Initiated, designed, and executed 3 independent projects: Startle Blink, Neural Synchronization & r VNS

• Startle Blink:

o Developing a non-contact sensor to detect and compare the measurement of the startle-blink facial muscle response by the CMOS Camera/PhysioCam and by facial EMG, the study is IRB approved and subjects are scheduled, completed primary data collection and analysis (paper drafted). o Developed protocol and leading the team

• Neural synchronization:

o fNIRS (functional near-infrared spectroscopy) study to measure the neural synchronization and coupling in the prefrontal cortex.

o Comparative analysis of the data sets via MUSE-2 headsets.

• Neuro-prosthetics:

o BCI study to develop an EEG-fNIRS hybrid device to explore the possibilities of brain-computer interface using fNIRS wearable technology.

o Explore the cooperative use of EEG and fNIRS sensor. o Analyze and process the fNIRS data by inhouse developed deep learning models (CNN network) to extract relevant features.

• Vagal Efficiency and Vagal Tone:

o Monitoring the psychophysiological regulation of the hemodynamics of the heart (Heart Rate Variability and Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia via the Vagus Nerve).

• Impacts of Respiratory Vagus Nerve Stimulation (rVNS) on Prefrontal Cortex Activation and Executive Functions:

Page 2 of 5 Shyama Shah-CV-04/2022

o Neuromonitoring the Prefrontal cortex during and after various breathing exercises, the study is under IRB review and pilot data collection and analysis have been done. o Aims include:

Establish a correlation between respiration, Prefrontal Cortex and Executive function

Establish a correlation between heart rate variability and PFC activation

Establish a correlation between respiratory induced vagus nerve stimulation and the prefrontal cortex activation (PFC) and eventually executive functions (EF),

How respiration induced elevation in EF changes over time, and

The impact of these factors on individuals.

o Developed protocol and leading the team

• Mentored and trained 2 High school, 8 undergrad students and 4 graduate MS students. The Kinsey Institute Bloomington, IN

Research Assistant Aug 2018 – July 2020

• Performed data and statistical analysis (Philips Actiwatch): o Effects of Seasonal Variation in Photoperiod on the Behaviors and Physiology of Icelandic Women. o Analysis of Activity and Sleep pattern.

• Biopac Systems:

o Developed a protocol to use the Biopac systems to collect the EMG signals. o Real-time data analysis, plotting of Python-based startle blink signals.

• Facial EMG study:

o Data collected for >40 subjects to replicate the facial EMG recordings with the Physiocam and/or CMOS camera setup.

• fNIRS study to track the attentional network in the prefrontal cortex of the brain.

• Data analysis:

o Evaluating the effectiveness of heart rate variability biofeedback for enhancing psychological resilience in members of the Reserve Component
