Program and Training Coordinator – Peace Corps Sri Lanka Support the Programme and Training Unit with designing and implementing a US Volunteer program with the Ministry of Education in Sri Lanka in which American Volunteers will serve as teachers in government schools for a period of two years. The program is designed to be implemented in Uva and Central provinces in Sri Lanka. Duties include monitoring and evaluation, engaging with government partners, overseeing the activities of the volunteers and arranging Host Families for the volunteers for their stay during the two years and help the Training Manger in conducting training for the volunteers in which the volunteers are trained to speak the vernacular languages to get their day to day activities completed and to understand the cultural aspects. Visiting Lecturer Open University of Sri Lanka:

Conduct English sessions for EGAP (English for General Academic Purposes) for Grandaunts of Open University with the permission of the present employer – Peace Corps Sri Lanka. Visiting Lecturer at National Institute of Education: I serve as a Visiting Lecturer at National Institute of Education and my Target group is Bachelor of Arts grandaunt and others who follow English courses provided by NIE. Support the program coordinator for Bachelor of Education and English Courses in designing and other related activities and consultancy.

Freelance interpreter, translator and consultancy services. Conduct seminars and workshops for youth on leadership and give motivational speeches based on Seven Laws of success.

Provided technical assistance and technical leadership on all matters related to Early Grade Literacy and Education of children. Provided technical assistance to program and LP staff in understanding and internalizing child protection within the Theory of Change (TOC) developmental pathways and program strategy in creating an Independent Reader by way of developing skill and habit of reading.

Supported the development of relevant capacity and individual capabilities of staff and other Core team Members who were Government Servants from Highest Institutions such as the NIE on our packages. By the way of conducting TOT to impart knowledge to enhance the process of early grade skill and habit development for reading in primary grade children. Visited schools and observed the teaching learning process to contribute towards the development of the curriculum for early grade children. In liaison with the Research Monitoring & Evaluation (RM&E) Specialist, facilitated periodic monitoring of project activities and used findings to improve and enhance the quality of the contextualized package that intends (currently the program exits) to create an independent reader. Ensured that lessons learned from program implementation and other relevant activities are identified, documented and appropriately disseminated for internal and external purposes, e.g. development of knowledge products.

Ensured timely submission of and compliance to Room to Read reportorial requirements both Global and Country Office.

Represented Room to Read in all national and international forums and Gatherings as a technical expert.

2010 – 2011 Joined a Sinhala Medium School to involve myself in teaching English and perform other allied activities. This gave me an opportunity to learn about the culture, religion and sociability of the Sinhalese community and was commended for many achievements and performances by the parents, students, staff and the principal. 2009 – 2010 Co-Ordinating Secretary to the Hon. Prepared students for English Day programmes conducted by the Ministry of Education. Prepared the school time table and all the other relevant documents. Prepared the final census statistics to be forwarded to the Ministry periodically.

2001 Educator Counselor, SOS Children’s Villages of Sri Lanka: Took care of the youth in the village and looked into their needs (food, education, clothing etc.) and informed the administration about every aspect in this regard. Attended periodical meeting and suggested meaningful and executable project. Received and provided trainings on child care aspects. 1992 – 2001 Teacher of English Ministry of Education: Taught English to student of all levels and assisted the principal and others to organize many activities and functions in the schools. I was in-charge of the English Literary Association of all the Government schools I taught.

I have organized several outbound training camps for the youth at the scout camp Nuwara Eliya and assisted the District Youth Services Officer in organizing many programmes for the youth in the district.

RESEARCH PROGRAMME EXPERIENCE

Engaged in a research on Youth Employability for T- Field Nuwara Eliya This was based on youth employment – my research findings were the Plantation Youth are not un-employed they are unemployable due to lack of educational or professional qualification. Their expectations and requirement are minimal and always show some kind of dependency. Recommendation – Data collection on qualification, carrier goals and finding suitable vocational skill training through a need analysis. I also compiled a glossary of all the institutions that provide Skill and Vocational Training

(Regional) and at present the ownership of this document is with Tea Field.

Collected data and conducted interviews for CENWOR on Domestic Violence for which I intimated Police Officers, Judges, Prison Superintends, Lawyers, Doctors, Social Services Officer, Officials of Department Probation of Child, Crime Branch Officials and various officials of the Governmental and Non-Governmental institutions. Collected data for the Open University of Sri Lanka for a research on Micro Finance and its Impact at Walapane and Hangurangetta area under the guidance of Prof. Collambage, Dr. Mahen Mendis and Dr. Chandraboss.
