At High School level I only worked with At-Risk students, which comprised 180-200 students who had problems with health issues and were either "Homebound" (due to cancer or other health problems), truancy, drug use, pregnancy and/or legal issues. Always in touch with parents working on truancy problems, our school attendance rose to upper 90th%ile 2003-2005.
Middle School level required alot of student counseling due to where our students lived (Jacksonville, NC).. Most students had one or both parents in Military (Marines) and were deployed, so quite a few students were upset, crying in my office and it was hard to comfort them as they missed their parent(s) so much. Developing new student orientation programs helped to build excitement around transfer and enrollment. I taught classes to 6th-8th graders regarding "social skill of the month". We tested students with state and local testing programs and I helped train teachers who would be giving tests.
Elementary School level pertained to grades K-5. Regardless of age, often there were problems between students and I employed either crisis intervention (myself) or peer mediation (5th grade only). I regularly met with classes to teach the social skill of the month, usually reading a story and then weaving the social skill into our discussion. Maintaining positive relationships with students, faculty and administration was a "given".
