Writing *: Explanatory Synthesis
Write an explanatory synthesis paragraph of 12-17 sentences that synthesizes information from the two
articles you read, specifically comparing and contrasting the purpose, style, and argument of the two
essays: “The Power of Situations'' and “The Milgram Experiment.” In the explanatory synthesis, explain
the similarities and differences between two texts that cover the same topic. Like the summary, you
must write this essay objectively; you cannot show favoritism toward one text over the other, nor can
you express your own opinions or judgments.
In order to write a successful paragraph, you need to do the following:
Write a topic sentences that clearly identifies the main similarities and differences between the
two articles.
Use textual evidence (quotes, paraphrases, etc.).
Write 12-17 sentences
Formal style (no I, me, my, etc.)
Proper grammar and sentence structure
Conclusion with “so what” factor
The essays “The Power of Situations'' and “The Milgram Experiment” were both written to inform
and persuade the reader that most people will obey authority according to the situation. “The Power of
Situations” was written by Professors of Psychology Lee Ross and Richard E. Nisbett. It was written in
1991.“The Power of Situations'' purpose was to persuade readers that character and moral choices are not
Determined solely by the person's character. The theme is human behavior and obedience. These
Psychologists observed other people and experimented with their behaviors. This essay was more
Informative and conversational. “The Milgram Experiment” was written by a Psychology tutor,
Saul Mclead. This study was written in 2007 but the experiment was conducted in 1973. The purpose of the
Milgram experiment was to inform the audience if the study group would either violate their conscience by
obeying the demands by authority or refuse the demands. The theme is similar to the “The Power of
Situations.” But the tone of this essay was more scientific. To conclude, these essays are about obedience
authority and how people react to it.
