All island Merit order in final MBBS Examination 2006 -296 o Undergraduate training in Sri Lanka is a clinical based training program of 5 years, conducted by the university of Sri Lanka.

o Suitable candidates were selected by a competitive General Certificate of Education advanced level examination according to the merit order. The students who had obtained highest marks from the advanced level examination were taken in to the six main medical schools in Sri Lanka.

o Training course in the university involves three examinations including second MBBS, third MBBS and final MBBS.

o Main subjects in the first two years of university include Anatomy, physiology and biochemistry. I have passed second MBBS in first attempt. o During third and fourth years of the university curriculum consist of two examinations include part 1 and 2 of third MBBS examination. The subjects include Microbiology, Parasitology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Forensic medicine and Community medicine. I have passed the third MBBS examination in first attempt. o The final MBBS leading to MBBS degree include four subjects include Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Gynecology and Obstetrics. The final MBBS examination also able to passed in first attempt.

o After second MBBS examination there was an extensive clinical oriented training programme throughout the undergraduate period about four years under the supervision of relevant consultants in the wards. I have exposed to various patients including Surgical, Obstetric Medical, Pediatrics and gynecological problems. Apart from main specialties the clinical training was extended in to Rheumatology, Radiology, Respiratory, Orthopedic, Ophthalmology, ENT, Neonatology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Forensic medicine and Cardiology fields.

Post- Intern

Appointments

According to the position of merit list and depend on the seniority, post intern appointments are given by the Sri Lankan government.

o Peripheral unit Ambalantota- Worked as a Medical Officer of OPD/ETU about 2 years. There were only 4 medical officers where I had to work and do the on-calls in a rotation. We have to manage patients without guidance of a consultant even in an emergency and with critically ill patients.

o Base Hospital Thisssamaharamaya - Worked as a Medical officer of OPD and ETU about 8 months where I had to manage critically ill patients and the emergencies by myself. The hospital drains a large number of patients from southern province. o General Hospital Matara- Worked as a Medical Officer of Accident and Emergency in the busy department of GH Matara about one year and five months duration. There I had to work under the supervision of experienced consultant and had to do first on-calls in a rotational basis. During that period, I have gathered lot of experiences in the field of emergency management of patients in all the fields of medicine including medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics, and subspecialties. o New District General Hospital Matara (Kamburugamuwa)- This a smaller hospital governed by General Hospital Matara where I had to work as a Medical Officer at OPD and ETU for a period of seven years. The experiences gathered from there was quite different from other hospital where I had to manage life threatening emergencies then we had to transfer them to Main hospital at Matara. o General Hospital Matara- Currently I am working as a medical officer at Cardiology Unit under two qualified Consultants. In southern province of Sri Lanka there are only few cardiology units are available. Managing cardiac emergencies, working in a cardiac ICU, performing Exercise ECG, performing central line placement and conducting clinics for the follow-up patients are the main duties conducted at the department of cardiology.

Internship

Once I obtained MBBS from the medical school, it was compulsory to work as an intern house officer under the supervision of senior consultants for the period of one year. o From October 2007 up to the April 2008 I worked in the Gynecology and Obstetrics unit at Teaching Hospital Kandy. There, I had to do first on call every other day and had to manage emergencies under the supervision of my senior doctors. (Supervising Consultant was Dr. Guruge L. Wimalasiri)

o From April 2008 to October 2008, I worked at the Pediatric unit as an intern medical Officer where, I had to manage the patients in a logical manner including emergencies.

Mrs. Priyanthimala Abeynayaka) o While in the Obstetric unit I had opportunity to gain surgical skills of preforming normal deliveries, performing uncomplicated caesarean sections and minor surgeries. I also gained experiences while accosting for the major surgeries to the consultant. o Moreover, I continue to disseminate knowledge through teaching medical students and para-medical officers of various grades. I have also conducted teaching sessions for allied medical staff, such as radiographers, technical officers and nursing officers. Temporary

Experiences

Since January 2006 I have worked as a temporary demonstrator at the department of surgery in the faculty of medicine University of Ruhuna until the commencement of internship. o The few medical graduates who has obtained highest merit score at the final MBBS were selected to the demonstrator post after the interview conducted by the relevant departments of the university.

o I have obtained hand on experience in surgery specially day case patients during this period. During the casualty days I had to work in the casualty ward and the theatre helping the intern house officer.

o Moreover, I have obtained skills in relation to computer literacy and proper documentation of surgical procedures.

o During that period, I have conducted teaching sessions to the undergraduate students including ward classes and case-based discussions. Teaching

o I worked as a Demonstrator in the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine Ruhuna Sri Lanka, from January 2007 to October 2007. o During that period, I was responsible for student teaching activities which included conducting tutorials for medical students; problem-based learning sessions and group discussions.

o I routinely provided teaching for medical students of all years in the hospital. o I take every opportunity to teach nursing staff, radiography staff and students. Computer Literacy

o I am competent at literature searching and retrieval, together with familiarity and competence in all Microsoft packages.
