Resume:

Linda Lee Smith

To whom it may concern:

I am writing to request the opportunity to offer my services to your facility. Retiring from my position as a Science Resource Specialist in the Paulsboro School District has left me with time that I would like to use inspiring others. I could be a valuable addition to your team in the following ways:

My sixteen years as Elementary Science Resource Specialist in the Paulsboro Public School District has allowed me to understand the process of science education as well as the students I engage. Since the inception of the New Jersey ASK 4 Science Test, 97% of all students taking that test in my district have scored above proficient annually. There were no science kits or books in Paulsboro, just my inquiry-based program.

In 2012 I received my Master of Integrated Science Education from the University of Pennsylvania. I took courses in chemistry, physics I & II, organic chemistry, biology, earth, space and environmental science, pedagogy, and science leadership. My content and pedagogy are in line with the most recent research. This will help me to impart current understandings to people visiting your facility. My work as a NASA Astrophysics Educator Ambassador in the Fermi (Gamma Ray Large Area Telescope) Project has given me great insights into the world of astronomy. I have presented workshops around the country that help teachers bring this high-energy physics content to a level even lower elementary students can understand. In addition to NASA certified lessons and programs, my Ambassadorship position gives me access to NASA materials that I can offer free of charge.

My work with the New Jersey Science Teachers Association, the McGraw-Hill National Science Advisory Board, and the Critical Review Team for the Next Generation Science Standards, help me understand the Framework for Science and what is expected of every science teacher nationally. Implementing those science and engineering techniques, especially in an informal science environment, will not only provide a solid basis for future citizen scientists, but might inspire them to use those insights as they make their place in our world.

Since leaving Paulsboro I have taught Science for the Early Years and STEAM II, both methods courses for elementary preservice teachers at Temple and Rowan Universities, in addition to serving as a University Supervisor for student teachers. These experiences have given me many insights into students, both young and old. I have also run afterschool STEAM programs for 21st Century programs JOY (Paulsboro) and Golden Gate (Vineland and Camden). Being certified in Projects WET, Wild, Learning Tree, and Bridges to the Natural World has allowed me to provide my students with many environmentally based activities. Attached please find my resume, which provides information about the many other assets I can bring to your organization. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. I look forward to meeting you and discussing this matter further. I truly believe that together we can make a difference in the world… one student at a time… every time we get them to think for themselves. Sincerely,

Linda L. Smith
