CITGO Petroleum Corporation had a problem with their crude flooding in their tower. This occurred because their crude went from heavy to light. There was a team of four students to fix this problem. The system we used was Aspen HYSYS. This project made me moderately familiar with the system. We rebuilt CITGO’s current system. In that system, I built the Naphtha section, entered pumps and heat exchangers information in the other sections, and entered crude assays recycling back into the tower. Once we received the same errors CITGO was receiving, it was time to redesign the system. The task of of building a naphtha hydraulic model was given by my mentor. This required some research and more data. She then gave me their pump information data sheets, onstream information data sheets, process flow diagram, and piping and instrumentation diagram. The only way to get the length for my model is to physically walk the pipelines. Troubleshooting was necessary to get the model to converge. This model was used to build a pump curve for the different sizes of impellers in our pumps. My recommendation was for them to increase their pump impeller size to produce more product. This capstone project enhanced my current skills and created new skills. Skills
